Copper.Diablo For what its worth: My TJ Sahara came w/ factory 30x9.5 & aluminum wheels. When I bought her, she needed tires. I got heavily backspaced 15x8s & put GY MTR 33x12.5 on 'em. Months later after carrying the 5th wheel laying down where the back seat normally is, I decided to mount it to the stock carrier. It went on & I could see the 3rd brake light with insignificant coverage. Over the course of a month or two, I could see a gap between the top of the swing gate & the bottom of the hard top glass. The weight of the wheel & tire was actually bending the swing gate.

I knew I was going against the grain/conventional Jeep wisdom by doing it - but I never heard anyone say "hey, the door will bend & you WON'T bend it back!" - hehe. If I had to do it again, I'd just spend the dough for the bumper mounted spare carrier. period. Like people have said: "Just because you CAN do it, doesn't mean you should"...

MCDavis Ok, it wasn't a problem. Got her home Friday and put the spare on...it fit fine. The bottom of the light was barely above the tire, and when I added my cover I could see where it might rub. So, I went to Lowe's and got 4 - 3/8" nylon spacers similar to the above pic, but smaller. I also didn't add any washers because the spacers fit perfectly. Problems solved.

Called my tire guy and let him know it fit. He said his installers get nervous about breaking stuff on customer's cars, and since mine looked like it might not fit the guy didn't want to run the risk. Frankly, I appreciate the attitude, and it really didn't cause me any problem. Now that the light's raised, it won't be a problem again.

I did notice that the first time I put the spare on, the lugs wouldn't tighten down to a point and stop. As long as I kept turning, they kept going. I realized when I opened the gate and it sprang forward at me that I shouldn't tighten them down too far. So, I backed off of each one until the tailgate lock started sounding like it did with the stock 30" on it.

How far does everybody else tighten the spare lugs?

Also noticed the tire is much heavier than the original spare. Hope that's not going to be a problem.

MCDavis Spare tire's getting changed today (warehouse shipped 1 tire wrong), so I'll mess with it this weekend. The SA is a wider and squarer (nice word) tire than the GS-A, and it's wider than the stock MT/R on a rubi (245/75/16 is actually a 9.5" tire), so that may be having some effect as well.

Once I figure it out, I'll post up. Thanks for all the input so far, and anything else anyone wants to add!

Stoplamps
24603. Every motor vehicle ( )1 that is not in combination with any other vehicle and every vehicle at the end of a combination of vehicles shall at all times be equipped with stoplamps mounted on the rear as follows:

(a) Every such vehicle shall be equipped with one or more stoplamps.

(b) Every such vehicle, other than a motorcycle, manufactured and first registered on or after January 1, 1958, shall be equipped with two stoplamps, except that trailers and semitrailers manufactured after July 23, 1973, which are less than 30 inches wide, may be equipped with one stoplamp which shall be mounted at or near the vertical centerline of the trailer. If such vehicle is equipped with two stoplamps, they shall be mounted as specified in subdivision (d).

(c) Except as provided in subdivision (h), stoplamps on vehicles manufactured on or after January 1, 1969, shall be mounted not lower than 15 inches nor higher than 72 inches, except that a tow truck or a repossessor’s tow ( )2 vehicle, in addition to being equipped with the required stoplamps, may also be equipped with two stoplamps which may be mounted not lower than 15 inches nor higher than the maximum allowable vehicle height and as far forward as the rearmost portion of the driver’s seat in the rearmost position.

(d) Where two stoplamps are required, at least one shall be mounted at the left and one at the right side, respectively, at the same level.

(e) Stoplamps on vehicles manufactured on or after January 1, 1979, shall emit a red light. Stoplamps on vehicles manufactured before January 1, 1979, shall emit a red or yellow light. All stoplamps shall be plainly visible and understandable from a distance of 300 feet to the rear both during normal sunlight and at nighttime, except that stoplamps on a vehicle of a size required to be equipped with clearance lamps shall be visible from a distance of 500 feet during ( )3 those times.

(f) Stoplamps shall be activated upon application of the service (foot) brake and the hand control head for air, vacuum, or electric brakes. In addition, all stoplamps may be activated by a mechanical device designed to function only upon sudden release of the accelerator while the vehicle is in motion. Stoplamps on vehicles equipped with a manual transmission may be manually activated by a mechanical device when the vehicle is downshifted if the device is automatically rendered inoperative while the vehicle is accelerating.

(g) Any vehicle may be equipped with supplemental stoplamps mounted to the rear of the rearmost portion of the driver's seat in its rearmost position in addition to the lamps required to be mounted on the rear of the vehicle. Supplemental stoplamps installed after January 1, 1979, shall be red in color and mounted not lower than 15 inches above the roadway. The supplemental stoplamp on that side of a vehicle toward which a turn will be made may flash as part of the supplemental turn signal lamp.

A supplemental stoplamp may be mounted inside the rear window of a vehicle, if it is mounted at the centerline of the vehicle and is constructed and mounted so as to prevent any light, other than a monitorial indicator emitted from the device, either direct or reflected, from being visible to the driver.

(h) Any supplemental stoplamp installed after January 1, 1987, shall comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 (49 C.F.R. 571.108). Any vehicle equipped with a stoplamp ( )1 that complies with the federal motor vehicle safety standards applicable to that make and model vehicle shall conform to that applicable safety standard unless modified to comply with the federal motor vehicle safety standard designated in this subdivision.

Amended Sec. 108, Ch. 307, Stats. 2009. Effective January 1, 2010.
The 2009 amendment added the italicized material, and at the point(s) indicated, deleted the following:
1. “which”
2. “truck”
3. “such”

So you need to check with your states vehicle codes to see if you can remove the third brakelight or not. The Federal law that people speak of was that vehicles had to be "Manufactured" with the third brakelight.

As far at your tire fitting...I have a 04 Rubi and my tires are stock 31" and it fits fine. I am assuming that the third brakelight assembly is the same.

JDsDream I have the GY 31's on my 06 and the spare went on the stock carrier without any adaptation. It is "snug" but it fits under the light fine.

jeepjones Just get rid of the light, after the milkjugs and side steps it was the 3rd thing I removed.

Neil F. Myself and others use hockey pucks behind the stock bumpers. Just get linger bolts. I got longer allen head bolts at Pep Boys. Hockey pucks are just about 1" thick. It's realy important that the tire is tight for the life of the carrier and the tailgate hinges.

Twt_74 Hey y'all. Got 33x12.50. And a 4" backspace. Tire doesn't hit the isolators anymore by about an inch out. Does anybody know where to get longer ones for an 04 tj

rogertc1 I just got set of 31 x 10.5 x 15 GY Silent Armors. They are winter rated (little mountain with a snow flake in it.) which is the reason I got them. Not any mud or rocks in my area of the county. Only gravel roads and snow in the winter.
I like how they grip. Anyone notice tires are getting harder to find in stock?

djw97tj i have 31s and the light isn't in the way...but like peepers said i would use it as an excuse to get an aftermarket one!

Not to beat a dead horse...but I also have 33" on my stock carrier...no problems and you cam still see the light

MCDavis Yeah, I don't think it's height either. The MT/R 245/75/16 (rubi tire) is 30.7" tall, the SA 31 is 30.5" tall.

Neil F. It can't be height. I've had 33x12.5 on the carrier with the stock light. The light also is not over the tire. It's slightly behind it. You could still see my light.

Peepers I believe that is what a lot of people do. when I first put a 30" tire it almost reached the light. My solution: that sounds like a good reason to get an aftermarket tire carrier

Having 31 x 10.5 x 15 GY Silent Armors installed on my LJ. Tire guy calls me and says that the spare won't go back on the stock tire carrier because of the light! I thought 31's fit fine...had a 30 on it when I bought it.

Anybody run into this problem on a 31" tire?

Am I thinking right that I can just put some washers under the bolts at the bottom to jack it up enough to clear the tire?
