Looks good. I'm going through the rust problem myself.
I bought a rust bucket, Not sure why I did it..
I think the V8 and the tires possibly winch had me...
But now I feel it was a horrible mistake, It isn't too bad since a tub can be bought for pretty cheap, but still a bit over an 18yr olds budget, who's in school and has a kid due in 3 weeks

|Tmandorfer||Ok guys well here is what happened, the original one I went to look at was a total rust bucket, this thing was a rolling piece of rust. But by sheer luck, this guy had another on for sale and I bought it. It is an 89 YJ with 161,000 miles on it. The motor has been replaced with an I4 out of an 91 YJ with about 85,000 miles on a rebuilt motor. The body and frame are in almost perfect condition with no rust, and it came with another set of half doors, full soft top, bikini top, and a cargo area soft cover. I spent 3200 on this one and am much happier with this one, even gave it mud bath last night. Here are some pics. Thanks guys for all ur help in deciding what to look for.|

|reondadomino||I'd check for missing exhaust manifold bolts at the header. I found that mine was missing one and then found out it's common for the YJs to break'em off. Mine doesn't seem to be broken off, just missing, which is nuts (no pun) but you definitely don't wanna have to try and remove a broken bolt in that area!|

I bought a 1990 YJ just a couple of weeks ago and I paid exactly the asking price for yours - $2,600. It has an I4, but only 75,000 miles on it. It does have rust holes in the floorboard and some parts underneath are rusty - heck the thing is 20 years old! I figure those parts can be replaced when they need to be. One thing I checked for was rust on the frame, which there was little to none which sealed the deal for me.
I plan on using the Jeep ob weekends and local trips into town and stuff - no heavy-duty everyday interstate commuting. I've been happy with it so far, though I did ground it when going through some woods in my neighborhood recently - but that's a different post!

|rogertc1||Never said what State you live in. Salt kills frames. Really check the frame for rust holes. How are the brakes and lines? Price seems OK. Keep in mind it will take some work to get it up to par with the 164,000 miles and you won't have the speed your are used to. It is a Jeep. plan on dropping a grand into it.|

|Garyk||Where is this jeep? In the rust belt or south? If its been where they salt the roads etc check for rust really carefully. The rear shock mounts rust pretty quickly in the North east. Also if the chassis is rusted pretty bad, you will have hell to pay getting parts off like shackles, bumpers, gas tank mounts etc.|

Any rust is a bad thing.
If it's just surface rust on the floor board it can be treated with some 80 grit and repainted with ordinary spray paint. Same with the rocker panel if it's on the inside. Exterior rust is more problematic. Even light exterior rust will need to be repaired and repainted professionally by a body shop. Failure to repair it properly will allow the rust to continue to creep under the surrounding paint.

|Tmandorfer||So I talked to the guy selling is he said there is some rust in the floor board and one of the rocker panels, what's the best way to fix these spots after I buy, and how much rust is a bad thing, I know if there are holes that's a problem but what else do you guys think?|

That V6 is more than likely an inline 6 4.2L. If it is a V6, then it is not the original motor and that should give you pause right there. Non original motors can be difficult to get past smog inspection if you live in such an area.
164,000 miles is not bad but I would still take it for a test drive on the freeway. It should not have any steering pull or power hesitation. Look underneath for rusted and bent steel. Anything on these Jeeps can be fixed but the cost of such repairs can quickly exceed your purchase price.

|marine13||When I was shopping around for mine I discovered there are plenty of beat up pieces of junk out there. Sure you can fix them up if you have the time and money but I didn't. I looked for major damage and body repairs, rust, leaks and smoke. For the most part Jeeps seem really durable and the mileage shouldn't matter if it's been taken care of.|

|Yjwolf||Main thing is rust. On the floor boards , the rear corners, and frame. Any leaks or mechanical probs and check to see if the 4wd works. For 2600 it's probly not the best but always check things out. Some people just don't know how to price things. Post a pic when u can|

Total jeep virgin needing help
Ok guys, I just toasted the motor on my 95 mercedes c280 and need new vehicle and this time I get to pick the ride. I have found a 90 YJ hardtop, V6 and it's a straight drive with a 164,000 miles for 2600 bucks. I haven't bought it yet but I'm really thinking this is the one. What I would like your guys help on is what to look and watch out for when I go to look and drive this vehicle? I know this ain't no Mercedes but I want a vehicle with some balls, and this should do the trick, so any help would be appreciated, thanks.
