|fire239||They could have put in a heli-coil the same size as a plug, I did that on an old chevy 283 one time. Fix the shock.......|

Actually, from what the mechanic said it seemed kinda bad. They had to re-tap the hole(in the engine) and re-thread it. er maybe they mean the same thing. i dunno. thats what they told me though. how does that even work? I mean if the threading for the plug hole got ripped out, how would they put new threading in without enlarging the hole?
Edit: Oops! Forgot to mention. The plot thickens. When I went to pick it up the mechanic informed me that one of my shocks broke free from the upper mounts in the rear and somehow came to rest against the gas tank. No damage, but that could have been very bad O____O How bad is it to drive without a shock? I mean, it's not *that* much bouncier than it's always been...would freeway driving still be alright?

|Darth Vader||I'm a tard. I took it to the mechanic and they said one of the spark plugs popped out of its hole and thats what was making it obnoxiously loud like that. They weren't even gonna charge me, but I had them inspect the jeep and they said my muffler and tailpipe and rear passenger side brakes are totally gone. Oh well, Theo's overdue for some TLC anyway. *opens wallet*|

|Darth Vader||Well....it may have been my exhaust manifold all along. When the tow truck showed up to take it away, I started it to back it out of the parking space. The driver, who seemed to know what he was talking about, said it sounded like my manifold finally split open and that's what was causing the noise. Said it sounded kinda funny but that's probably because of the cracked manifold. I'll know for sure tomorrow. *crosses fingers*|

|Darth Vader||Alright, I made my way back to the gas station finally to have a look at it. I turned her on and she showed oil pressure, but the noise remained. I hate to say it, but I think the engine is done, as little sense as it makes, since if there's oil pressure and there is in fact oil in it(I checked) I don't see how either the pump or the sending unit could be the issue. I had no idea engines could just go from fine to blown in an instant like this. She's only got 125K miles on her, too. *shakes head*|

Can you install a mechanical gauge temporarily to double check the oil pressure?

Let me get this straight, according to the order in which this is written. Your engine started making a "terrible terrible noise" and then you still drove it 70 miles to get home. Then when you slowed down to below 25 it makes more noise and it isn't till then you start to worry about engine damage?
If that is the correct order of events then the worrying about engine damage is too little too late. That should have been your thought before the 70 mile trip with an engine making bad noises.

|Raleighjeeper||Did it overheat? Any puddles underneath it or visible leaks now that it has been sitting at gas station? Exhaust still intact? My muffler separated from the exhaust pipe once while driving down the road and I had a similar experience - very loud all of a sudden and exhaust smell in cabin.|

Awful Noise...Death Rattle?
So last night my engine began making this terrible, terrible noise. I drove about 70 miles to get home, and after getting off the freeway, not noticing any strange noises whatsoever mind you, the moment the car dropped below about 25 mph the engine abruptly went from a normal engine noise to something reminiscent of a go-kart. Suddenly it was extremely loud and making strange noises, and I started smelling something funny in the cabin. Luckily I was right next to a gas station, where I parked it, and there it lays until now. I seem confident that it's the oil sending unit, I've had problems before where the pressure sensor seemed to be lower than normal but I dismissed it as paranoia after reading several other posts concerned about the same thing when it was nothing. But the question I would like answered is, how likely is it that I significantly reduced the life of my engine, and should I even be considering pouring several hundred dollars into this thing to fix it?
