1BLKJP My guess is that because of better technology and know how on switching product lines faster they were able to end TJ production last year sometime and and ramp up the JK line at the same time.

Also the differences in suspension between the YJ/TJ and the TJ/JK were much greater back in 96 going from a leaf sprung vehicle to a coil spring/linked vehicle. While the JK's suspension is completely different from the TJ it's the same coil/link setup.

NalinMFG so why didnt they take a year off between the TJ and JK?

daddyjeep I was still cruising around on a Huffy back in 87, so I can't recall.

I did a search and you are correct but I seem to remember something of a delay between the CJ and YJ swap over.

erickpl There was no MY 1996. But production on the 97 MY started in 1996.

It is not unheard of. Corvette's skipped a year back in 82 or 83 as they went to the C4 body style.

Odhinn If I remember right corvettes skipped a year also but in 83 so it probably is more to hype up the new model design. Definately not to work out the bugs. The big three usually can re-tool a plant pretty quick.

khenderson and although there was no 96 wrangler, if you go to auto zone, you can buy a TPS for an 96 wrangler. i had to get one for that imaginary year to match up when i replaced mine. freaky stuff!!!

MOz Hackle...

OK, now you got me going....You're not alone on the CJ/YJ/TJ transition thing.

In 1987 I bought my first Jeep 2 years after H.S. - '65 Kaiser Willy's CJ6....AKA -The Fantasy Island Mobile and yes it was orange with a white top (Tatoo and Mr. Rourke were not included). Everyone that had a CJ back then had heart burn for the new YJ with the square lights.

Couple months ago, I bought an '02 Wrangler X and it's been nothing but fun since then. Just like old times but much more advancement in the platform. Brakes that work, fuel injection, real motor and a heater that can actually burn your hands, and one of my favorites - it has a boxed frame.

Enjoy your new ride and welcome to the forum. Everyone is cool here so ask any question you want.

Dare2BSquare Man, I had been married for 10 years by then. And I was driving an Audi 5000 with a 5 cyl diesel and 5 speed. It would be nice to have that one back for a dd.

Don't feel alone Hackle I remember it also. I was in freshman year of high school and looking for my first vehicle when they came out with the YJ.

My first jeep was an 87 and it was a YJ.

Hackle Just remember I am older now and may not hear you call "Hey Jim I need a Winch up this" or " Hey Jim I need a spot up this". It works both ways Jack. I was not around during WW1 or 2 for that matter but I know the history of both. It is called respect for those that went before you.

MCG Yes there was no 96 wrangler ,1996 was the transicion year between YJ and TJ,for example my friend's 97 Tj the production date on the sticker @ the door frame it says 09/1996. it seems that 96 was the production year for the TJ,or Chrysler just want that gap for marketing or who knows what.
Bottom line there was no 1996 wrangler.
05-22-2007 11:41 PM
1BLKJP Yeup, just like Jim stated, they had to take the model year off to setup the factories for the TJ from the YJ. Now you will see TJ's that have 1996 build dates, but they are actually for the 97 model year.

1996 jeep wrangler?

Hey everyone, probably a stupid question, but hear me out please cause i am a bit of a newbie.

I just purchased my first jeep, a 1995 desert tan sahara automatic. i absolutely love it! I have buried my self in the jeep phenomenon and have been enjoying learning all of the history of the Jeep.

a few sites that I have been to have mentioned that there was not a 1996 jeep wrangler produced. Others have just listed the year for the yj as ending in 95 and the tj starting in 97. Did the 96 really get left out, and if so what is the story behind its omission.

thanks to all, I love my Jeep!
