NO WAY. The AW-4 Is way to complicated for swapping. Yes, It fits, but its a PITA. Do you REALLY need an Overdrive in a TJ?? If you do, then just get the 42RLE in the 04+ TJ. Look at the BS Stu went through just to get an Overdrive.

JCS05Rubi Hes in Illinois, they have more mud there than rocks right?

If your big into mud or water, keep the manual. If your big into rocks, and dont see water or mud very often, swap for an auto if you want, but a stick wont kill you either. More personal preferance now that we have those hand throttle things.

my .02 but I dont play on rocks since theres none around

Jerry Bransford Oh man, if you wheel hard maybe you should give that decision to swap its automatic for your manual a second thought. I'd kill for an automatic on my rock crawler TJ.

BUSAFREAK That's good info thanks..

I'm keeping it manual. Hopefully that too will bolt up. This isn't my daily driver, so down time is fine incase it doesn't and I have to search for one.

1BLKJP You should be good to go. The changes that were made included mounting locations for the external components. They just don't line up with the bracketry.

So are you going to use the Auto or are you going to put your flywheel/clutch/manual on the new motor?

BUSAFREAK I have a 4.0.

I looked around and some state that it's a direct swap for 99 on. There couldn't of been drastic changes from 98 to 99 could it?

The engine comes with an auto trans. Mine is manual. It is also complete with alt, starter, pw steering, etc. I have to find out if the computer is included. I doubt if the wiring harness is.

The guy took it out to replace it with a bigger engine. I have 128K on mine and was thinking of getting a reman engine soon, but this would be cheaper if it fits plus it has low miles.

1BLKJP The basic premise is the same between the years, but you would want to get all of the peripheral pieces from the 04 also since they changed some of the exact mounting locations on the block between years. Also it would be a good idea to get the computer and wiring harness from the 04 if you could also.

Can we assume that you have a 4.0 right now in your 98? Or do you have a 4 cyl.?

I have a chance to get a 4.0 engine from a 2004 Wrangler. It would be great if It would be a direct swap. I don't know if any changes where made in those years that could cause a problem.

Any of you guys know?
