MCG Sahara...More options installed,19 gallon fuel tank for that year also,on 97 sport was an option,(if I'm not wrong)
My friend drives a 97 sport and i have a 00 sahara,There is a big difference on the standard features,plus the options allready installed on mine,like full doors,A/C,Alluminum wheels(grand canyon),31's all terrain,factory fog lights,side bars,cd player,sound bar,nicer seats,etc etc.

I am planning to purchase it soon so it is a big risk buying a car from out of state, this is why I join the forum to ask for some advice.
Go with the 98, the 97 has some quirks, old style slider temp controls, breaks the flapper door in the heater box, alot of the body parts are non standard. Example, the headlight retaining rings that hold the lights in the buckets, you can't just buy the ring and the standard ring that the parts catalog lists do NOT line up, you have to spend $90 for the new bucket and ring, go ahead, ask me how I know , the grill and hood releases are also different, fender holes for the hood bumpers are different plus a whole bunch of other little stuff you only run into when you roll one and have to rebuild it. That said I have 3 97's, one of which I bought in Ct about 2 years ago for my daughter, got it privately thru auto trader.com for $3k, all it needed was a new soft top. Some 97's had the newer stuff towards the end of the production run or so I have been told, not seen one with these eyeballs, just look at the heater controls, if they are straight sliders thats the one you don't want, if the controls are round go for it. The sahara has a more cushy interior and better carpet then the sport. The pecking order is SE base, Sport then Sahara
Just noticed that those jeeps are from NY, man check out underneath, every jeep I have seen from NY state looks terrible underneath from the winter road treatments up there, 5 years old up top, 40 years old underneath...

OK I did some research online, I know what it is now thainks a whole bunch

debruins it will wont really make a difference unless you want lockers or 35's, but it would help the resale vales, and if you get bitten by the bug!

i was thinking about it and if the dealers dishonest he could give you a shot of a different skid and you would have no way of telling until you got it, so make sure their reputable

OK I will ask for the photo of the skid plate, and what is the Dana 44?

daddyjeep Dude has a lift in his driveway, we are all jelous!!

In an effort to stay on topic, isn't there someone on the forum from Clinton NY? For some reason that sounds familiar. Wouldn't it be nice to send someone impartial to check it out for you.

From my point of view I would go with the Sahara. A year newer and a higher end model with only a few more miles. It shure would be nice to be able to crawl around underneath and look for any neglect or abuse.

binaryking Go with the 98. I don't trust 97's. No offense to owners of that year.

jjseel T.J. models start at S.E., then X, Sport, Sahara and Rubicon. Each package has more stuf on it, but you could special order I guess just about anything...My 2000 Sport has the D44
05-31-2007 09:01 PM
4.0l sahara Don't worry if it has a d35 choose the one you like better.
05-31-2007 08:56 PM
Joe Dirt Get the VIN from the dealer and then you can punch up a build sheet and find out what axle, ect it has.

Yeah, I might go with the Sahara because it is a 1998, the dealer is willing to take $500 off, it looks very clean, I will ask them to email me the Car Fax history.

I wouldn't look for a very smooth ride from any wrangler though. You are still going to feel bumps and when the wind picks up you're going to know about it. My advice, test drive them both and see what ya like better. That sahara may have a crappy ride, who knows!

Good luck and welcome to the Forum

Sahara or Sport, need help

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum, I need some advice and one question to be answer, I hope you guys can help me because I am planning to buy one of these models, but do not know the difference, please help me

1998 Jeep Wrangler Sahara or 1997 Jeep Wrangler Sport they are both selling for $6,995, both are automatic, both are 6 cyc., both are soft top . Sport has 96,000 miles, Sahara has 107,000 miles both are in very clean condition inside and outside.

The question is which one has a smoother ride?, which one should I buy?
