I am going to start going through the tub full of parts it came with and start sorting out what I have and what I need. Will have to decide whether to go with the Ford drivetrain it came with or the Chevy set up I have...
But the big thing is that I will make it run again, and it will see the hills!

+Now you need to go find a vette motor and put in that big a** green jeep.
I can see it now, vette motor, 6 speed trans, 12 inches of lift, 44 inch tires, and to heck with the rest.

|Gate53||Welcome to the addiction!! Get it running and learn to wheel it as is to start. It'll tell you what mods you need by the terrain that you want to wheel in. Making it look "cool" won't take you up a hill you want to climb. With a Jeep it's a 50/50 agreement: Driver skill/Jeep it takes both to excell. To start: some tow hooks, a snatch strap and maybe a winch, CB. Enjoy!|

you sound like you have the ability and skills to revive that old CJ, so more power to you and best of luck. That baby deserves a resurrection and to see better days wheeling. That is one thing I love, seeing oldies brought back to life bigger and better. Once I hit the lotto I'll be doing the same for my 1954 Chevy pickup sitting in my garage. To bad you're not in Phoenix, I could use your help

Well, wife wouldn't let me have any pants, and I still don't get to take her Rubicon wheelin, so I drug home an old CJ5 today.
And I am going to nickname it "The Pants"

Well, It is going to have to be a cheap one. XJ is one of the wagons? I'll save money first, I want a Wrangler.
I am going to get the transmission rebuilt in this Infinity J30 I have and see about trading it for a Wrangler, non-running or whatever. I don't mind putting a bunch of mechanical work into one.

On an actually helpful note, what is your budget? That's really going to determine where you should be looking. If it's really low, have considered XJs (I'm not sure if that's allowed on Wrangler Froum). If you're set on a cheap wranger, I'd say get a 4cyl - maybe a 91 or newer YJ. They're cheaper initially and you're much less likely to break stuff. If you've got some money for this Jeep, look for a TJ with the 4.0 and a D44.

Well, I am not going to be rock crawling, but I do plan to go up in the hills and put it through it's paces. It won't see much highway driving at all.

|scotiez||What are your plans for the Jeep that you buy? If you plan on doing alot of offroading and putting 35 inch tires on, then stay away from the D35, If you plan to keep it mostly stock and don't plan on much off roading then a D35 is ok, Many people have run D35s with no problems.|

|XJ Knight||Avoid the Dana 35 rear axle. They don't like the stress we tend to put on them. End result is that they blow up alot sooner than any other axle you will see in a a Jeep.|

I would look for one close to stock and do your own mods slowly. That way you know what it has and what you want, Instead of buying someone elses build. Also i would stay away from the 4 cylinder. They have plenty of power for off roading but lack in highway speeds. Get the 4.0 6 cylinder.
SE is your basic 4 cylinder
X has the 4.0 6 cylinder, and some extras
Sport has the 4.0 with optional D44 rear axle
Sahara has the 4.0, Optional D44 rear axle, Body colored flares, and an interior package
Rubicon is Loaded.

Seriously though, with kids and a husband that won't leave anything alone (I tricked out her Deuce, worked over her Mustang, etc) I can understand her wanting the Rubicon to be hers, something she doesn't have to share.
Thanks for the tips guys, I am not seriously looking at that particular jeep, just showing you an example of things I have been seeing on the list. I don't know if there are particulars to look out for, although Cockmaster-Flash there in the foreground would have been a hint not even I could ignore....

|530ktm||I would not even consider this Jeep. Look for one that is close to stock or with slight mods that you can tell have been done properly. This Jeep looks like some kid slapped a bunch of junk on it and now wants to dump it quickly. If you buy a Jeep that has been lifted and had a bunch of work done to it, you never know what quality has been installed and when you get it home you may end up with a piece of crap and hate yourself.|
