fastwoodsracer I believe in 91 chrysler started just putting 1 tank in the wrangler, it's a 20 gallon tank. But the tube to the vent, it was made longer to shut off at about 15 gallon's.I've seen the mod online to drop the tank, pull the tube and shorten it, making the tank usable to 20 gallons. Unfortunately my jeeps a 1990 and this mod is not for mine.

jamesmarshall5 Hey how do you fix the gage problem?

Travis91 there 15s but you can mod them to hold 20 by lowering it or something and most the time you can squeeze well over 15.

kj 92yj not disagreeing with you at all because that will give you the exact measurement your looking for, but isn't it bad for your fuel injectors to completely run out of gas? have always heard that, but don't know if really true or no.

Fuel Capacity YJ

My 91 JY has a 20 gallon tank. I learned this after I ran completely out of fuel and the fuel gauge said I had a 1/4 tank full.

YJ fuel gauges seem to have a life of their own. The trick is to learn where the "out of fuel" condition occurs.

My practical advice, is to run your fuel tank until Empty. Keep a small "full" 1 gallon gas can available for when you run out of fuel. When you've sputtered out, (and added your spare 1 gallon) head to the local gas station and watch how much fuel goes back into your tank. 15 or 20 Gallons, minus the little bit you put back in.

Look at your gauges to see where the YJ says it's empty vs. where the gauges read a full tank.

Tdeanbrian My 91 with 33's gets 16 to 18 mpg I have the 14 gallon tank it's either going to be the 14 or 20 gallon

kj 92yj no problem. to be safe, depending on your engine and tire size, i'd stick with the 16mpg assumption and work from there. i have a manual i-6 with 31's and 3" lift.

45 ACP Thanks. They did offer a 20 gallon tank on some 91 models. It looks like I can get 125 miles on a half tank. This is my first Jeep so I am just feeling things out.

kj 92yj yes, my 92 does that as well. i can tell you that it is over 15 as i've put more than 15 in mine before. i have noticed that i get about 16 mpg so i get nervous at the 250 mile mark......which would make it a 15.6 capacity. so, my guess is between 16-17......

1991 Wrangler Fuel Tank Size?

Does anyone know how to tell if my Jeep has a 15 gallon or a 20 gallon fuel tank. It is a 1991 Wrangler. The reason is so I can estimate my fule range per tank. I don't want to run it dry and then see how much fuel it takes. Fuel gauge bounces all over the place when it gets below 1/2 tank.
