Pmedg So I havent got new tires for it yet, but when i had the oil changed the other day i had them rotate the larger tires to the back and put the smaller ones in the front. I took it out last night and cruised in the snow and hte 4 wheel drive seemed to work perfectly. and it was so much fun cruising through the large drifts of snow. thanks again for all of your help everyone.

Pmedg i just saw this Craigslist ad and am thinking about buying the tire/wheel combo so that i can get teh 4 wheel working. the only thing is they are 32" and im worried that they are too big w/o a lift. any thoughts?

New Jeep 32" SWAMPERS on rims!

Pmedg i still havent gotten new tires for it yet. havent put it in 4 wheel either. once i get new tires i will let you all know if that fixes the issue

Pmedg yeah, my grandparents used as an island summer car on MV and never put it in 4 wheel drive. before this wrangler they had an 84 CJ-7 that was put into 4 wheel only once.

Just remember that your speedometer will be off then. You will be going faster than it reads with bigger tires. The biggest stock size was 30 /9.5 /15 You can put 31 /10.5 /15 but at full turn they will hit and rub. Just don't turn all the way then.

4Jeepn stock tj with stock rims.. 31x10.50x15. You might be able to fit a big bigger but it will be in the fenders.

Pmedg how big can you go as far as tires are concerned w/o a lift. ive read some of the other threads and some people say 31, some say 33. just curious because if im going to buy 2 new tires, i may just go for 4.

TexasT Four wheel drive vehicles must have the same size tires when in four wheel drive. Even if you swap front to rear they will be different sizes and should not be driven in 4wd. While driving on snow will allow it to easily slip and not cause harm, using 4wd on pavement will break something which may have already happened if the previous owner drove it that way. Match all four tires and then try it. If it still pulls after that point there may be damage to the front diff.

Plowboy1970 Well, that is your problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your fronts are bigger and trying to crawl away from the rear. Go get some new Wrangler RT/S P235/75/R15 and put them on the rear. I bet your problems will disappear.

The 215 75 15 tire is 27.6 tall

the 235 75 15 tire is 28.9 tall

That is a big difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4Jeepn Try putting the bigger tires in the back and the smaller one's in the front. Best of course would be the same size all around.

Will,
The front tires are Wrangler RT/S P235/75/R15

The Rear Tires are Michelin XCX/APT P215/75/R15

both are relatively new treads.

4Jeepn Sounds to me like a bad u-joint. I would say bad brake caliper but it only does it in 4wd vs 2wd.

No, the drive train is not locked together when in two wheel. Look at any car with smaller tires in front. If you have two different brands or sizes on this Jeep, it will make it hard to get into 4 wheel and very hard to get out of 4 wheel as the drive train is stressed and locked in. Sound familiar? Looks like you will be buying some new tires. Check what the spare is too!!! I too am new to Jeeps, owning mine for a week, but I have had, and still have a full size 4 wheel drive truck. One rule of owning 4 wheel drive vehicles. Rotate tires and replace all at one time.

The Ugly Jeep The mismatched tires could cause the havoc. It wouldn't do it in 2 wheel drive, because the front driveshaft is disengaged in the transfer case, thus sending no torque up front.
Does it do it in 4 Low ?

Not all the time. If you look at some specs you will see they all don't match.

Look at this, Dunlop Grandtrek sj6 30 9.5 15 tire. Overall diameter, 29.7 circumference, 93.3"

Dunlop Grandtrek SJ6

Look at this one, Dunlop radial rover at Same size 30 9.5 15 Overall diameter 29.4 Circumference, 92.4

Almost an inch difference, in just 8 feet. Something has to give. And if one set is worn. Get the brand and type of tire and how bad they are and post here.

Pmedg if the sizes are the same, but the brands are different thats fine though right? it doesnt pull at all in 2 wheel, only in 4 wheel.

They better ALL, and I mean ALL!!!! be identical. If not you will have pulling and binding problems.

Plowboy1970 When you are accelerating in 4 wheel drive the front wheels can pull side to side, as the wheels get traction. Go read the tire sizes on all the tires. They BETTER be the same. If not you will have problems. Tread all the same on the tires??? If one has more tread (bigger tire) it will pull .

Pmedg it was on snow covered roads, but i have noticed it on pavement as well. sometimes it feels like it is driving fine, but not for to long then it starts pulling. its pulling when i give it gas (or i guess pushing as the left front wheel is likely powering forward and the right isnt). in 2 wheel it runs perfectly

Then why is it not pulling to the right out of 4 wheel drive???? Are you on snow covered roads when it pulls??? What kind of road? When it pulls are you giving it gas or coasting???
