I know this thread is a little dated, but I have a few questions.
#1. With a Crate Engine, How does it work with the Air pollution laws? Will it be difficult to pass the state inspection?
#2. Do Crate engines already come with the master computer and hardware to make it run 100% on its own , making it possible to trash a lot of the old vehicles' wiring and boards , kinda like starting new??
#3. Anybody actual went this way with their Jeep, how did it turn out?
Thinking of doing this down the road on a TJ I bought recently as a long term project , and wanted to get different opinions. I am not really into buying new anymore. More and more, manufactuers are just adding to much electronic crap , causing more issue. Just looking to have a engine and tranny , with a cool looking Jeep. Back to the basics.....the simple things in life...lol

|SurfKaster||Rebuild if you like, but I suggest a swap. I've seen rebuilts ranging from 1250 t o 1800ish. I've also seen many a complete low mileage engines in 400-600 dollar range on CL. It's a very common motor & finding used one in good shape shouldn't be too difficult. Personally, that's the route I'd take.|

|JRGouletElec||Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to buy a rebuilt motor? I have a 1987 wrangler thats boiling the coolant and I'm waiting to find out if its the head gasket or not. If it is the head gasket should I consider just putting in a rebuilt motor? I've seen them online for about 1015.00 to 1300.00.|

I am currently putting a rebuilt engine in my 98 wrangler I went with the long block it is complete with head but you have to transfer all the accessories over from the old engine or replaced as they have said in previuos posts. Even this is alot of work im not a mechanic by trade(anymore) but have done engine swaps in the past and it takes awhile and you have to pay attention to details and do it right if you cut corners it will take longer and cost more. Make sure you pull the engine before it blows up as it will make for more work. If it blows up and sends metal throughout the motor and various other components you have to make sure everything is clean and free of debris. If you have an oil cooler it needs to be replaced intake manifold needs to be cleaned or replaced ect.Good luck let me/us know how it goes.

|JeepnJim||My buddy and I rebuilt a '93 4.0 in my garage. We had the block cleaned and had it bored at my local Auto Tire and Parts. It took use two weeks but we did it. Just be very attentive to torque specs, cleanlyness and stick to the repair manual. Be sure to lable all wires when you disconnect them and replace your belt, hoses, thermostat and the like while you're at it. Or just buy a crate engine.|

|Tarby||I have a few friends that have put Jasper rebuilt engines in their Jeeps (4 cyl, 6cyl, and 8 cyl). They have been happy, and come with warranty. That would be my route to take.|

|Jerry Bransford||X2, I would just install a remanufactured engine which will include a warranty. Rebuilding an engine is more involved than just swapping in new replacement parts, there's a lot to it... especially since that kind of a job should have some previous experience working with you in your favor.|

vajeeper, Let me be the first to welcome you to the forum. I am in no way a mechanic and would not have the tools or space needed to do a rebuild. However have you considered just doing an engine swap as opposed to rebuilding yours. Take into consideration your time and cost of parts. Maybe as a temp solution until you can get yours up and running if there is no serious damage to yours. Just my 2 cents.

Engine rebuild kits...anyone done this b4?
New to this forum, so hello to all.
Have had wranglers since '92 and love them. I currently own a '98 4.0 Sport, with 200,000 miles on it. About a month ago, loud knocking sounds came from the lower part of engine and have had 3 mechanics tell me the same thing, in a nutshell, need a new engine. I've always taken great care of it, and although 12 yrs old now, still looks great, IMO. Anyhow, any of you folks ever taken on the task of rebuilding your own engine using master engine rebuild kits? Although not a skilled mechanic, I usually do all the work myself, if not overly involved and am a machinist so have access to CNC mills and lathes if need be. Was just wondering if anyone out there has ever taken on a task like this and what their thoughts were on rebuild kits as well as any suggestions or tips concerning tearing down an engine. I can't bear to sell it, love it too much and would cost way too much to replace it with another Wrangler considering all the upgrades and money I've put into it over the years. Greatly appreciate your suggestions/advice/thoughts.
