This has happened to me before. Not in a Jeep, but in a VW Passat. The cause was defective turn signal switch. The dealer replaced it at no cost although the car was past warranty age/mileage. The reason they replaced it at no cost is because it is potentially a safety issue and, at least then (I'm talking 8 years ago) the policy of VW was to treat safety issues as "lifetime" warranty. Some of my friends had similar defect in different European-made cars, and all of them were corrected under warranty, or as safety issue with no cost to the owner.
From what I read here, it looks like a frequent problem in Jeep. Chrysler should correct this for free, or even make a voluntary recall.

So many people with this and it isn't limited to the Wranglers, my Liberty has the same problem and it caused me to run someone off the road yesterday. Center lane, car coming up fast behind me. I signal right to move over, Liberty changes and signals left and as I proceed into the right lane he attempts to pass on the right. Luckily there was a good burm and he kept it under control. Also happens when I make a sharp right hand turn and it clicks back, it triggers a left turn.
Being more careful when triggering the blinker isn't an acceptable answer your car should NEVER signal a different direction than you told it to. I easily could have killed someone yesterday.

Yes, this is making me nuts too. It seems on mine, once it starts it will switch between the left and right blinker until I can finally cancel it.
For example, lane change to the left:
1) Partial press down *left blink*, *left blink*, etc.
2) Release *right blink*
3) Gentle press down *left blink*
4) *right blink*
5) *left blink*
4) *FLASH HIGH BEAMS*AAAGGGHHHHH!!
Sorry... I was thinking that it was just a bad multi-function switch, but it seems various years are experiencing the same thing.
Wyckoff has them for about $60. Maybe it'd be worth trying...

|creepinjeeper||Happens on my 07 also, glad its not just me . It seems that if i just engage the lever completely then tap it out to disengage rather than to grab and move the lever has solved my problem .|

On the procal website it has listed as a feature "One-touch turn signal activation/deactivation".

I've never used one of these yet so I can't say for certain it really disables this feature. I'll probably call their 800 line first before I buy just to be certain. I also wanted to turn on the daytime running lights on mine which this will supposedly do as well and has a steering wheel centering feature which would be handy right now as I'm having to guess if my wheel is straight after putting a lift on mine recently.

When changing lanes, I simply push the lever up with my fingertip just through the range of movement with light resistance to a point just where you start to feel the detent for the fully engaged signal, then let it go. This is the intuitive and normal action/motion on any vehicle when using lane change.
more often than not, this causes the opposite signal to activate upon it's return to center.
If I keep my finger on the lever, and ease the return to center, it keeps it from going too far and activating the opposing signal....but that also prevents the intended signal from 'thinking' it was a momentary action and activating the triple blink....it will only blink as once or as long as the lever is held in postion.
Manually cancelling the signal, whether from full engaged or momentary, almost always causes the opposite to activate (if left to return on it's own).
Sierra8: do you know for fact that this can be turned off via the procal (or dealer/service)? It would seem that it would be comp controlled....shame to lose the feature, but to me it is a PITA and possible hazard.

When turning I push the lever up until it's locked and then take my hand off the lever. After the wheel cancels a right turn mine will occassionally signal 3 times left. I started paying attention to how I was operating my turn signal lever initially thinking I was bumping it when turning the wheel. It seems like the spring is very stiff in the lever assembly and snaps back too hard activating momentarily a left turn indicator.
I think this only happens when signaling right as the lever assembly is returning downward and triggers the left turn.

So... to those having troubles with this, how are you manipulating the lever?
Say you're signaling a right turn, with the lever fully pulled up and locked. Are you saying that the auto-cancel after the right turn causes the left signal to engage? Or is it just when you manually cancel the signal?
I'm trying to determine if this is a warranty/dealer issue, or simply the way you're operating the lever. For manual cancellation, I personally guide the lever back to the center with my hand. But even if I didn't, it doesn't have enough rebound strength to engage the opposite signal unless I physically push it down that far.
It makes me think that there's an actual problem with yours that might require a trip to the dealer, rather than a "well, that's just the way it is" type of thing.
I will say one thing though, even though I'm not having that problem, the lever feels cheaper than any other I've ever used. I'm not sure why that is, but it just feels like it's going to break on me one day. My girlfriend's HHR, which cost her less than half of what I paid for the Jeep, has a lever that feels far sturdier than this one.

I've had the same problem with my 2008 Unlimited X. I've considered getting the AEV Procal to disable one touch turn signals but I haven't been able to find a deal on one used as of yet. Next time I'm in for service I'll ask if it can be disabled at the dealership.
I've gotten a few folks kinda ticked off at me in traffic signaling right initially and then having the turn signal malfuntion and signal an immediate left lane change and then I keep driving straight not realizing right away what has happend. Looking to get this fixed before I run into the angry road rager one day.

It is almost as if either the 'return spring' is too strong, or the center position detent is too weak.
It does seem to happen everytime I do the 'momentary' quickly...if I ease it back to center, it helps prevent the opposite signal from activating...although I find that being gentle kinda prevents the triple flash from activating (it will only single flash) and I have to hold the lever to keep the flasher going.
I wonder if there is a way to either disable the 3x flash function or fix the problem?

I just found out, accidentally, that my JK has the the "lane change" option. hold lever up or down for a split second, release and i get 3 flashes. Or hold it and it flashes for as long as I hold it.
I have noticed if i let it rebound fast, it might turn on the opposite signal.

|Twitch Boy||My '10 JK does this. I usually activate it by accident when I start to signal to change lanes, then change my mind and cancel the signal and the blinker stays on. I end up having to signal the other way to get it cleared, which leaves me with the OTHER blinker going momentarily and a bunch of confused drivers behind me.|

Man, I have the SAME problem, and was about 1 occurance away from posting about it. It is REALLY freaking annoying, and it only happens when I change lanes, so the wheel doesnt turn and 'undo' the turning signal. I try and very lightly tap it back to off, but it goes to the other direction! back and forth, then high-beams as I fiddle with it more, and eventually my turning signal and high beams are both turning on and off, left and right, and i'm left cursing whatever the problem is that is doing this.
Eventually I find SOME spot which stops it, but...I dont know if my hands are delicate enough to find that sweet center spot by themselves, fuckit, i'm not signaling for changing lanes anymore! This is so frustrating!@

|1rootman||My 2007 unlimited did the same thing, after making a lane change flip to turn it of and it would start flashing the other direction. Living in S Florida blinkers where optional to me until a Trooper pulled me over on the turnpike for not using them, I like he just wanted to check out my ride..lol|
