GrNMoNsTr--93YJ I've done all my stereo installs and idk if its a jeep thing but this is the nastiest wiring I've seen. They actually cut wires off the harness that I needed to wire to so my rear speakers are now the front speakers and the speaker bar is my rear speakers. I have no clue why you'd wire to the courtesy light when if you leave all the wires intact from the factory wiring harness they all match up with the aftermarket harness you can buy at autozone or advance auto or anywhere really. You might just want to buy a new wiring harness to give you brand new wires to hook the stereo into. Pic would be good too.

dcam91 Thanks for the feedback guys, I'm about to go take my dash apart and take a closer look..
Is there a way that the stereo could have been wired to the cigarette lighter fuse? Haha I wish I knew more about this kind of stuff, it can't be too hard that's what gives me a headache.. Maybe I'll take some pictures of what I'm dealing with..
The guy who installed the stereo ran one wire from the stereo harness and attached it to the courtesy light.. when I open my door the stereo turns off only to turn back on again when the door shuts.. I wish I could meet this guy so I can understand wtf he was on while putting in my stereo lol.

NAVYCHIEF there are two power leads that go to the sterio system. one from the ignition(power with switch on) and one always hot for radio memory. the lead to the cigar lighter is only on when the key is on.try this

GrNMoNsTr--93YJ I am almost in the same boat as you with the whole jungle of stereo wiring. I'm finding new wires daily that aren't plugged into anything or are wired to the wrong color coded wire. One old subwoofer wire that wasn't disconnected started burning through the plastic coating and filled my cab with smoke.

Anyways, what I'm trying to get it at is you may need to completely remove your dash pad and trace those wires from your courtesy light and cig lighter back up towards your stereo because somewhere down the road a guy confused those wires for something it wasn't and took power from the stereo to power those components. You might also want to take it to an audio specialty store and see what their opinion of it is. Also the courtesy light under the dash should have a plug connected to it the runs to the side of your door frame where the door meets the bottom corner in the front. Might be a bit confusing but I can post a pic if you can't find what I'm talking about.

Short Circuit??

Hello everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself being that this is my first post. I'm currently a student and study IT management in central NY.

Anyways, I drive a '93 YJ Wrangler which I've had for almost 2 years now and love it despite it being old and a little rusty. My problem has been persistent since I bought it but I haven't had to time to take a look at it.

When I bought the jeep, the PO said very clearly that he did not wire the stereo. I now know why, it's a freaking mess. My problem is that when the cigarette lighter is pushed in or I plug in something to the outlet like a GPS, my stereo turns off and the courtesy light underneath driver's side dash comes on.

The outlet works though and I'm able to power my GPS but I cannot listen to music and that annoying light stays on. Any ideas what could be causing this? I'm new to any kind of electrical work but am always willing to learn something new.

Also, it might be worth noting that my stereo does not turn off when the key is removed and has the potential of draining my battery. I'd like to change that so the stereo only works when the key is turned on but need to tackle this problem first!

Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance! - Dom
