That sounds pretty fun. I'll have to try that sometime. When I went up there when I was a kid we would take mini vans up there. Now it's almost a must to have 4x4. What days do you get off work. It would be a lot more fun with more people. And to get pulled out of mud if needed. But hope not

And yeah the tower is still standing. My buddy climbed up in it. He's every bit of 200 lbs so I guess it's pretty sturdy too. Only thing is it doesn't have the first flight of steps. And there was quite a bit of graffiti and bullet holes. It's kinda sorry that some people mess stuff like that up

custer3_5 Where is buffalo mnt??
04-01-2014 07:52 PM
echo2 Does anyone know if the trail up to Buffalo Mtn is open? Back in high school...when dinosaurs roamed the earth....you could get up there with a vehicle.....but it was tough.

custer3_5 I went down to christiansburg to see an old friend yesterday. We ended up going out past Blacksburg to the old fire tower. You will need skid plates to get up there. My jeep has a 2 inch budget boost on 31 inch tires. I thought I was gonna get stuck several times. I could be wrong but I think the road is about 14 miles. I had to turn around because I lost 4wd on that trip and I knew I couldn't go any further without it. Anybody wanting to make that run on a Monday or Friday I'm definitely up for it again
04-01-2014 08:39 AM
echo2 You'll not need a skid plate for any of this.....couple spots on 690 are bad but just watch the road.

Poor Mtn Rd is a bit rough in places....but still a public rd.
04-01-2014 07:07 AM
norinko Cool! I'll have to try those with the Mrs. :-)
We have tooled arround the county line road area in our 04 before, but had no idea of a plan for where to go.

I'm looking for something rougher for my 99 with the lift. Though I am quite cognizant of the fact I have no skid plates yet. lol :-)
04-01-2014 06:48 AM
echo2 Or.....if you really want to go a bit out of the way.....stay on 221 and turn down County Lline Rd.....look on you GPS or Atlas....and do the Sugar Creek loop........That used to be my old bus route....hard to believe now that they used to take a bus back there for one kid.....

You could make it a long ride and come up 690....cross 221 to Tinsley Ln/Bottom Creek Rd....to Sugar Creek.....back to Bottom creek....over to Tinsley Ln....over to Poor Mtn....down to 460....probably a 1.5 +/- hour run with a group.....and after a rain is more interesting and less dust.
04-01-2014 06:40 AM
echo2 If you want an OK trail/road/s....go down 221 toward Bent Mtn. As soon as you pass Poages Mill, hang a left beside "Jake's Garage"(I think 690 starts there.). Keep on 690 all the way to the top of Bent Mtn. (Generally stay to the right...you'll know when you hit the switchbacks... )

Once atop the Mtn....you can jump across 221 (Hit the Tinsley Ln loop and turn at the big red apple processing shed) and come down Poor Mtn Rd on to the back side of Glenvar....over near the industrial park at the end of the road construction on 460.

Would be glad to ride it with you once I change my idler pulley........and I fear my heater core.........and .......grrrrrrrrrrrr

norinko Photos from 618 Sunday with friends. Checked on a couple trails arround Newcastle but they were all locked. Fun but I am now officially tired of 618 lol . :-)
