You know what, you're right. I can remember WAY back in 1999 when I first bought my YJ and the dealer sold it to me with a bone dry transfer case. Long story short, those nylon inserts on the mode fork melted off and I had to replace them because I couldn't get the 4WD to work properly and I can vaguely remember that it made a sound then. They were like $4 for set of them then and it took me about an hour to replace them.

mbaseel Got the problem fixed... It was the drivers side motor mount.

mbaseel I still have the problem but now for some reason my rear pinion seal went out so now I am doing to u bold yoke swap so I can run u bolts instead of the straps on the yoke for the rear diff. I was thinking the same thing that you were and am wondering if my chain might be slipping that drives my rear drive shaft. could be logical. This would be visible when I do my sye this summer when I do my suspension lift. For short term I am just going to drive it. If I am not really hard on the vehicle then it doesn't make the popping noise. I do not know how to post a video but if someone wanted to explain it then I would be more than happy to.

Dr. Venture can you make a video of that popping sound? I have the same issue, but all my joints and straps are brand new. I thought it was the trans internally slipping.

funjeeper69 you might want to check your torque arm bushing also. Mine makes a popping sound sometimes and I checked mine yesterday and guess what..... Bottom nut loose. but to late. I need a new bushing. I had my son send me a new one from the USA and I hope it will be here soon. love thoses Jeeps.

mbaseel So where the u-joint sits on the yolk and is held in by the ribbon c clamps has no c clips. there is no groove or anything for them. it moves back and forth in this because it looks to me like the ribbon clamps have stretched and makes a loud poping noise when it hits the stops on the yolk. you can see the ribbon clamps and how the u joint sits on the yolk and the stops on the yolk in the picture. hope this helps guys. i would really like to figure this out before something goes horribly wrong.

mbaseel I have access to a lift but everything is solid except for the u joint like I said. I have already checked it. it is almost like the rear diff takes a bigger u joint than the drive shaft so with the one that fits the drive shaft there is play in the one on the diff. If that makes any sense...

sevenservices interesting... is there a loose trans or gearbox mount near the back? I understand the concept of your strap, just wondering why the drivetrain would move like you mention?

Weird... Do you know anyone with a lift? Just to make it easier to get to it all.

mbaseel I have already done the new u joints. it is almost like the ribbon straps that hold the rear drive shaft u joint to the rear diff are stretched and allowing the whole drive shaft and u joint to move up and down. It is not a twisting movement but a side to side movement.

funjeeper69 When I had one go bad I normally change all of them both front and rear drive shafts. I have a better feeling then. If you got it out better to do it once then to have to take it out in a few days, weeks

sevenservices x2 on u-joints. Replaced 'em in a couple vehicles. The snapping is usually there... You'll probably find some of the small needle bearings shattered under a u-joint cap after they come out.

mbaseel Ok guys I have figured out where the noise is coming from. I got underneath the jeep and can move the drive shaft back and forth where the ribon clamps are supposed to hold the u-joint in. So when I step on the gas the torque on the drive shaft is causing it to "pop" (noise) because it is bouncing back and forth and hitting the stops in the yolk. So my question is are the ribbon straps supposed to hold the u-joint in place or is it supposed to move like this? From looking at it my best guess is that the ribbon straps have stretched and that is causing the u-joint to bounce back and forth between the stops on the yolk. Do I just need new straps?

mbaseel coyote_94yj - no this is not the sound that is makes. it is a deeper sounding sound. almost a hollow sound. How do I post a video to the internet? I can record the sound on video so everyone can hear it then that might make it a little easier for someone to pinpoint the problem.

fweaky - I will have to check the motor and tranny mounts. I didn't even think of this. I will check tomorrow and get back with a reply to the thread here.... thank you for the suggestions.

I went and got some gear oil today so this weekend sometime I am going to pull the covers off of the diffs and see if I have any broken teeth or anything looks wrong. I will take some pictures and let everyone know how this goes. Right now I am installing new axle bearings and seals on my brothers ranger so my rig has kinda got put on the back burner till the weekend when I can finish his between work and school.

Coyote_94YJ A transfer case chain will NOT pop in 2WD. If it does then something is wrong elsewhere as well (as in it's stuck in 4WD all the time)

This is a video of my old YJ and you can hear the t-case skipping teeth. It's more of a snapping type sound. Does this sound like what your experiencing?

Tarby Transfer case chain slipping or sprockets/gears the chain rides on and bearings shot. Just putting a new one in my wife's TJ next week. Snow season is here, and threw it into 4 hi for snow, and "pop-pop" under load. Have the same thing in my YJ last year. I have a friend that rebuilt mine in 3 hours with all new parts....$420. No problems since.

mbaseel So I did some additional testing today... the only time it does this is in 1st gear. I can do burnouts in reverse no problem but when it is in first gear and I give it a good amount of load it does the POP thing. It will pop sometimes only once, sometimes up to 3 times but never more. unless I am on a rocky trail bouncing around it is every time I get good grip and a good amount of load is put on it. It won't do it in the mud... just on the pavement or rocks where the tires can't slip.

OK... so I just went out for another test that i thought of. Of course I am on pavement... in 2 wheel drive it pops only in first gear. In 4hi it pops only in first gear. In 4lo it pops in every gear... This seems kinda weird to me.

wasomma yea ive heard of this, im sure someone will have a better explanation, i hear this sometimes in my jeep when I'm in 4x4 on flat pavement

YJ making "POP" noise under load

Hey guys I am new here to the wrangler forum.
My name is Mike and I am having a problem with the jeep. It is a 93 Wrangler 2.5l has a 2" shackle lift and is on 33x12.50 Baja Claws. My problem is when I leave from a still position under a good amount of load I feel a POP come from what feels like under my feet as the driver. I had someone stand outside of the vehicle and listen to it. They heard the POP but couldn't locate the region that the noise was coming from. Like I said it feels like it is coming from under my feet. I am going to pull the front and rear diff covers and see if I have a broken tooth in my spider gears but I am wondering if anyone else had this problem also. The Jeep is driveable if I just take it easy and just drive normal but when I take it offroad and am under load going up rocks or anything it "POPS".

Things I have narrowed it down to...
possibly a bad front drivline U-joint
Broken spyder gears
Bad tranny...

At this point I can't think of anything else. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

PS> looking to regear to 4.56's with rear locker and go to a 35x12.50 mud tire with 4" Rough country lift and 1/2" bomerang shackle lift with 1" body lift. This is near future. Probably between now and next summer.
