Sounds like the release spring (which releases nothing) came off. It's this guy that holds the fork on the pivot ball on the side opposite the slave cylinder.

That's assuming 2007 are same way. This is tj forum just noticed you have a 2007.

Took back apart and the throw - out lever is up instead of straight. Are we not doing something right is something else wrong? Need help

What do you mean by the gears getting stuck in the transmission or the xfer case? The Jeep was parked and in neutral. He shifted it into 4wd (on the xfer case?) without pushing the clutch in. Then, the (xfer case) shifter was "stuck" in 4wd. I caught him at that point and pushed the clutch in to shift it back into 2wd (on the xfer case?).

Unfortunately, my Jeep has no warranty because it is just over 3 yrs old.

The 3550 is a loud transmission when in neutral with the clutch out. Unless you hear metal on metal grinding noises (you will know if/when you hear them) I wouldn't worry too much about it. They are just a notoriously noisy trans. Whatchagonnado?

I've got the "What is that sound the fridge is making?", "Why is my vehicle making this sound?", "The computer should not be making that sound" DISEASE!!!

I'll try to ignore my sense of hearing with things like this and I'll just turn the radio on and drive...lol

Mike001 THe gears spinning like he said earlier there ain't no sound insulation. My Mustang did it after I put a short throw shifter on and my jeep does it now and so does my trans am

lap49X Oh, Are you saying that with the clutch pedal out and the clutch engaged, the throwout bearing is not moving while everything else is? Is that what causes the "wurring" sound?

I previously had a chevy s-10 and it had a similar sound, but not nearly as loud.

The throwout bearing only spins when the clutch pedal is depressed, it doesn't spin when the clutch pedal is up. It rotates from being mounted on the shaft but it's bearings aren't moving and it's not rotating against itself when the clutch is engaged (clutch pedal up).

The "wurring" sound is probably just the throw out bearing spinning when the clutch is out. The "chatter" or "marbles" sometimes happens even when it is sitting with the clutch out, but it usual does it when in reverse or when shifting between 1st and 2nd gear.

Mike001 The chatter ya'll are talking about marbles sound slike the noise any vehicle with a stick makes when you bog the engine down i.e. drive in the wrong gear as far a t-out bearings go I've never heard one whir when it was bad they normallly sound like a cage full of angry canaries they chirp. If your tranny wasn't in gear when your dad was playing with it it shouldn't in any way affect the tranny.

My 2000 has been making this noise since it was about a month old. I started to hear it more while I was in a drive thru waiting in neutral. It's perfectly normal. 80K miles later and it's still the same clutch and tranny making the same noise. It's all good.

Mine did it when I took it home brand new from the dealer back in March of 1996 when it had 46 miles on it. Once again, it's due to the lack of soundproofing. Wranglers are not cars where the engineers worried about making them ride quietly Look around to see how much soundproofing is between the transmission and where you sit. You won't find anything besides that thin piece of carpeting.

I completely understand noise when a vehicle has 100,000+ miles on it, but it's hard to justify with a vehicle that doesn't even have 20,000 miles.

However, trust me, just about all Wrangler owners worry about the perfectly normal but often angst-causing sounds of the transmission when in neutral and the clutch is out. What about the little bit of chatter? (Similar to the marbles sound I've seen others mention on here)

Jerry Bransford That you can hear a whirring sound with your foot off the clutch is perfectly normal on a Wrangler. All that's happening is with your foot off the clutch, everything inside the transmission is spinning around. Since the Wrangler has zero soundproofing other than the skinny carpeting and none under the console, it can be heard inside. No worries.

Is the noise somewhat "normal"? It seems like it is, but it's kind of annoying. The only thing that worries me is that it seems like it's gotten noisier. If I let it go until it breaks, will it cause more damage? Could it be something other than the throw out bearing? Last question...Is there a way to adjust the throwout bearing (If that is what is making the noise)?

Same here same problem.. i hear it mainly when shutting off the engine.. if i shut it off while holding the clutch down it shuts off so quiet that you can hear a pin drop on the floor. No known problem with the 5 speeds.. thats messed up they replace the tranys at 20k miles and 20 after you need a new one? I've seen that discussed before and 19-20k miles seems preatty dead on.


Rubi you know what i hate the most? When the first gear teeth align so perfectly so you cant shift into it.. before i had to drop the clutch and rev it up and then shift but now i've discovered shuv it in 2nd and back in first again...

JCS05Rubi I *THINK* I have the same noise as you in my jeep. 05 Rubicon, 6 spd. When going forward up a hill, or reverse up a hill, no gas, and you push the clutch in, you get a loud chatter. Dont know about any other time, as my MTR tires are too loud to tell after 10mph Ive had mine in to the dealer 4 times for it and a few other things, they said its just wear and tear and not to worry about it untill the clutch goes (which could be 1 mile or 100,000 miles). My jeep has 23k on it, trans was replaced at 19,000 (which seems to be the trend with these 6spds..).

Take it to the dealer for a trans noise if you want just to have it documented, but I wouldnt expect the dealer to fix anything for a noise under warranty unless its broken.

Your dad shouldnt have messed anything up if the jeep wasnt running. Did it get stuck between gears in the transmission, or the xfer case? TJ xfer cases are supposed to be shifted at 1-3mph, not really stopped, because the gears arent always 100% lined up. Its no biggy, just push the clutch in so the truck rolls a foot or so and then move the xfer case lever. Only damage I can think of would be the synchros, but I doubt he hurt anything..

Im sure your pops would know what will break a Jeep anyway, he is infact older than you
