The Hi-Lift does seem like a cool idea. Most the time all I would need is the ability to put something under the tires for traction. Or something to lift me up so i can dig myself out. and I can use it as a winch...But using it as a winch seems less efficient since you can only do a few feet before you need to adjust your rope length.
P.S. as you can tell i have no experience with this. Im used to ATVs where all you need is a buddy to push or pull by hand or with another quad. or you can just lift it out. haha I have never worked with anything over 500LBS haha.

As to a come-a-long, a 2 ton would not be the best Idea IMO. If you figure most winches are 8000lb or 4 ton (or more), and your jeep weights about 35-4000lb so if your stuck in the mud or burried in a ditch it might not be enough.
Tow straps or Snatch straps (know the difference) are always a good investment.

|05wrangler||i could see the point in a come-a-long over the jack, but i like the jack cuzz its able to lift the jeep up high to change 33s or bigger. either way i think you would be happy|

The Hi-Lift is < $100 and can be used as winch. I personally like this come-a-long but it's not cheap...

|05wrangler||i say the hi lift jack, you can get the hi lift winch kit to. just learn how to use it to your advange and it is a nice tool to have strapped to your tire rack|

|4Jeepn||For under a $100 a better come-a-long would be my pick. Add that with the tow strap and it will be helpful. Over $100 But under $500 I would get a warn m8000 winch.|

affordable recovery gear?
Yesterday I bought a Come along (american power pull 2-ton cable puller) and a 30' tow strap for my jeep. Id mainly be using the strap with a buddy to pull me out but liked the idea of the come along for a Just in case scenario. well I got the come along out today and its a total Piece of crap. The cable was all messed up and jammed and the lever controls are very hard to manipulate. I guess I should have expected this for 25 bucks. In the past I used a chain come along that was awesome but i did not realize they are in the 150-200 dollar range after looking them up because of my frustration with the cable puller.
I really liked the idea of something that would be able to pull me out of a too deep snow bank that I mis-calculated or some mud that was just a bit too deep. no rock/cliff type of things. just simple get me out situations. As I do research I cant find anything that people seem to like that are also affordable. I looked a Hi-Lifts, Portable winches, and other come alongs and cant seem to find the perfect "bang for the buck" tool.
Id like to spend less then 100 bucks, im not doing and major recovery, just simple light things.
anyone got a tool they love and swear by? something somewhat easy to use? and something affordable?
I know a proper winch would be the real answer but I don't off road hard enough or have the money to need or buy it.
