|Ageless Stranger||Definately want to invest in a bumper/tire carrier. I bought the Crown Automotive from know where 2 jeep. (It's a Warn without the Ws cut into it.) It was a MAJOR PITA to mount, but I'm happy with it now.|

Dirtworx on Ebay makes quality mounts for a reasonable price. The only downside is that they come unpainted.

I ran mine for about 6 months with a 33" spare on it. Wheeled it that way and it did warp the gate a little.
It will depend on if you're just out on the highway or out bouncing on the rocks too.
For what it's worth, bumper & tire carrier RockHard FTMFW!

|Neil F.||I've had my 33x12.5 on mine for 2 1/2 years and there are no problems. It is a must that the bumpers on the tailgate are TIGHT against the tire. Depending on the backspacing, you may have to move the bumpers out. I used hockey pucks. Other people have added a plate/post/roller to the bumper or hitch for the tire to rest on.|

|OsageJeep||I had a 35" (yes, I know yours is a 33) mounted on mine and it did mess up the hinges. It makes it hard to open without the tire on it. (made my own rear-bumper w/swing away tire carrier) I would not recommend mounting directly to the tailgate|

What I did to mount my 33" tire (285/75/16") tire was to mount the factory spare tire carrier to a steel plate, and then mount the steel plate to the tailgate with the carrier 2.25" higher (that's the simplified short version). I also put two more bolts through the top of the factory carrier, and one additional bolt through the bottom of the carrier. And then along with bolting the plate to the tailgate with the factory hardware in five places, I put SIX additional bolts through the plate and tailgate to really secure the unit to the tailgate.
I used some old Jeep leaf spring bushings to raise the center brake light, and extended the rubber bumpers on the tailgate and such 1" so they would come in contact with the spare tire. All-in-all I have about $30 invested in the set-up. Hopefully the pictures will tell the story better.
I used to have one of those Olympic extra heavy duty spare tire carriers on my tailgate that advertised raising the spare up-and-out 2". It moved the spare out 2", but didn't raise it up any (I measured). All that does is put more strain on the tailgate (think leverage or a pry bar) moving a heavier spare tire out from the tailgate. The above set-up keeps the tire about as close as you're going to get to the tailgate.
Someday I'd like to get the TnT tub mounted spare tire carrier' but this'll do for now.

|roloplex||you can mount your tire on the stock carrier with the rugged ridge mount. I have read that it will be fine for a year or more but would not recommend keeping it that way for to long. It will mess up the hinges over time. I put the warn rear bumper and carrier on myself. Pic in my profile if you want to see what it looks like (has the receiver built into the bumper).|

need help with mounting rear 33"
So here is the deal...
I have read numerous posts on mounting the rear tire.
Am I able to mount the rear 33" on the factory mount or should I use a rugged ridge heavy duty tire mount in its place.
Now here is the real dilemma..... If this is going to damage my tailgate, i can not decide on a rear bumper/tire swing. I like the smittybilt xrc rear bumper with tire swing but it has no recovery points.
please give me some info/help
