computeruser ARB would be fine, but a good LSD like the T-T should get you along quite nicely on the snowy roads and on reasonable trails, and at substantially less cost than a properly setup ARB and compressor.

If you were building your vehicle for "hardcore" use, well, you probably would already know what you needed and, frankly, wouldn't be asking your questions at this site.

Jerry Bransford So long as you route the air hose and electrical up and totally out of the way so they can't get snagged offroad, sure that would be reasonable. Be sure to use ARB's standard air hose and not their extra heavy-duty air hose. Even ARB advises against the use of extra-heavy duty air hose in their FAQ because if it snags, it is strong enough to pull out fittings that are not easily repaired on the trail. If you snag the standard air hose, it is strong but it will snap cleanly before pulling out a fitting which is easily repaired on the trail in 1-2 minutes with ARB's quick splice kit. ARB only started carrying the extra heavy-duty air hose at the insistance of some who can't bring themselves to install standard-duty anything.

Ageless Stranger It's just the differential portion that I need to have done by a pro, right Jerry? I was planning on doing the plumbing and electrical myself.

No, the ARB Air Locker is definitely... MOST definitely... not a product you want to try to install yourself no matter how great you are with tools. There are several areas that require special knowledge and techniques to get it installed properly including a modification to the axle housing so gear lube isn't forced up the vent tube. This is one job that needs to be given to a shop that is specifically very experienced in installing ARB Air Lockers. And not just any lockers, ARB lockers.

The air hose fitting is installed through a hole that is drilled in the upper part of the axle housing. As mentioned above, installing an ARB takes specific ARB experience and training, it's not a job for the inexperienced no matter how proficient the installer may be in other similar work even like installing ring & pinion gears.

Jerry, I want ARBs in my rig. I haven't (yet) been able to locate a 4x4 shop nearby to do the differential work. I was wondering recently what has to be done when installing a pneumatic (or air powered, even ) locker? Does the air hose go through the housing, or the cover?

hound2005tj i would like to go with the arb but i can't find any arb installer around the area plus i have this thing that i don't trust anyone to fix anything for me i've been in a lot of situation where i gave it a try but they keep letting me down i am great with tools and following direction so i might just do it myself

rday78 Well... not sure exactly where hes gunna be wheelin but if its anything like NY its more dirt and mud than rocks... I just liked that it was always helping me rather than having to turn it on and off... I was gunna get an auto-locker but after reading some of the posts on here about winter driving I figured the truetrac was the way to go

Jerry Bransford The Truetrac is a limited slip differential and it is superb on an ice or snow-covered road. Where they become nearly useless is offroad when the trail is so uneven that a tire is lifted up enough for it to lose traction. In that situation, a locker rules and a LSD is nearly useless. Whether you go for a locker or LSD depends on what is more important to you.

rday78 Hey Jerry... what about the truetrac??? I was considering putting a selectable locker in the f/r of my jeep then I got to thinkin... The locker is only usable on the trail and in NY where the trails are tight and wind the lockers would make turning a bit harder. I put the truetrac in the f/r and even tho I have yet to really give them hell, they seem like they add a ton more traction. The other good part is they are also useful on the road.

Performance? It's a spool when locked and open when unlocked, similar to the ARB and any other selectable locker.

Xjman1 I am in similar boat as you and I am more than likely going Powertax no slip. Had one in the rear of my XJ and it never gave me trouble or let me down. Cheap way to lock up for those occasional trails and worked ok in snow.

I LOVE the Detroit Locker, that is what I installed into my last TJ and I put over 100K miles on that Detroit Locker. I wish I had f/r Detroit Lockers instead of the Rubicon lockers I have in my replacement Jeep. I feel the Detroit Locker is ideal for my temperate desert driving conditions.

I didn't recommend the Detroit to the OP because he lives in Maryland where the roads get iced up and covered with snow where a selectable locker is a much better/safer choice.

Jerry Bransford Your rear Dana 44 axle has 30 spline axle shafts, and that is the axle I would definitely lock first.

Locker-wise, especially if you have to drive on icy or snow-covered roads, a selectable locker that allows you to lock/unlock it at will is the way to go. Of the several selectable lockers that are out there including the ARB Air Locker, cable-controlled Ox Locker, and the electrically controlled ECTED locker, I personally would only go for the ARB Air Locker which is essentially bulletproof. The only thing to be wary of when choosing the ARB Air Locker is that the installer has to be experienced installing ARB Air Lockers. Joe-Schmo garage mechanic is not up to what it takes to install an ARB correctly which is key to making it reliable. Installed correctly, they are extremely reliable, STRONG, and the next best thing to sliced bread.

A distant second place is the OX Locker which I'm no fan of due to its cable. Last, and one I wouldn't even consider is the clutch-based ECTED locker whose clutches WILL wear out and it can only be rebuilt by sending it back to the factory.

4Jeepn ARB would be my vote. Gives most control and very strong product. Also costs the most. Both front are rear would be great, but if I could only install it in one I would go rear.

what's the best locker for me?

i've been doing some research to find out what's the best locker that will suit me i have 2005 tj i6 6spd 3.73 axle ratio with dana 30 in front and dana 44 in rear i will be running with 33s soon with a 3.5" lift soon i am a daily driver in winter cold season only ( we do get warm temp so i ride ) and will be doing some intermediate trails now is it better to have both front and rear or just rear only but which one? anyone out there can give opinions with their experiences thanks
