RockyWrangler98 It's been a long while, but I figured this needed saying. I looked under it at night, and what appeared to have been the "worm gear" was actually a pivoting bolt that the castle nut had backed off of. Apparently, this is crucial to steering....

TexasT Sometimes there are really hard problems to diagnose on the forum so when we have one that is literally coming apart it makes it easy to diagnose. ACdelco and many others refurbish gear boxes and I got this from one of their distributors. It has a list of all the vehicles that used that gear box. The ACdelco part number is 36-0517525 and that part fits:

So if you're calling junk yards any of these would probably work.

Also looked at NAPA and they have one too. Link

Looks like they're 150 and up, BUT there is a core charge of $100 or more and depending how bad yours broke it may not have a good core. I would find a good salvage yard and get one used. This is a part with few problems and you can probably get one for about $50 or so.
Anyone have any info on the dodge truck fit?

The Ugly Jeep Not sure of what years, But Dodge durango steering box will fit and it is a heavier design. The wider tires can put some stress on the stock steering box.

TexasT Very unusual problem, but like the previous post...you now have a new steering box and the diagnosis was pretty obvious. Welcome to the forum...that was just too easy...

Newbie to forum needs help diagnosing steering issue

Last night, I missed a turn, so I turned into the parking lot next to my destination. I shifted into reverse, and backed up a bit. I went into first and turned and then heard a popping sound in the front. Thinking I hit something small, I attempted to continue turning but I had lost complete control of my wheels. I can turn the steering wheel but it does nothing to my wheels. I had to get towed home....I got the chance to check it out, and it sees as my ''worm gear has popped out of my steering box''. I don't know much about these types of things so any expertise or knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I'm curious how it needs to be fixed and roughly an explanation of what happened. It's a 1998 Wrangler with a 3.5'' lift and 33'' tires if that hels any. apreciated.
