TexasT My gosh. The price to get it rebuilt is a joke. My son has a 99 too and his alt is locked up. I went online and found one on eBay (not my favorite place for rebuilt parts) but found a 160 amp rebuilt for $130+-. Feedback was over 99% and 9,000 had bought...so I did too. Will let you know. They had new ones, 200a, but I went with a rebuilt.

99TJCrawler Check this one out: 99-00 NEW JEEP CJ WRANGLER YJ HI OUTPUT ALTERNATOR 175A

Think I should just go with that? They provide a 1 year warrantee

If the durango one fits, I would rather go with that b/c of the cost. This one is only 15A more than the durango alternator.

99TJCrawler I'm pretty sure I've got the 81. I'm probably gonna see if I can match one up at a junk yard. Weren't the 136 amps out of a dodge truck and the 160 out of 01-06 dodge durangos? I think these may work. If anyone knows for sure, please comment on this post. Dont wanna buy one at the yard then end up not working. BTW TexasT, Having this one rebuilt was a joke. These guys wanted a barrel of cash to do it near me. I told them that I wanted to have it rebuilt to a higher output and they told me I'm probably looking at 400-500 bucks. That was the fastest I ever hung up the phone in my life haha! Thats about what I'm spending to put an 8.8 under the rear!

Sherpa The 1999 Wrangler came standard with an 81-amp alternator. If you opted for the Electrical Group, this was upsized to a 117-amp alternator instead. Have you tried to verify which one is on your Jeep? If you've got the bigger one, maybe you'll be okay as you are. (Just a hopeful thought.)

99TJCrawler Will do. Thanks for the help

TexasT Been a while since I did it but that's what I would expect it to be. Let us know as that may be a good alternative for an amp upgrade.

99TJCrawler Ya, I've thought of doing that. What kinda cost you think i'm looking at for that? Like 100 bucks?

TexasT Call an auto electric shop in your area and see if they can rebuild yours to 160 amps. I don't know if it will work on jeeps but it works on other alt's ive had. Should not cost an arm and a leg either.

AzTJ There are a couple of ways... One is a Mean Green alternator, but those are big bucks.

I only know of the Dodge upgrade working on 4.0L's up to '98... not sure what they changed after that.

99TJCrawler no one has anything? I gotta feel like someone has got something that they've done on a 99 to upgrade the alternator.

How can I upgrade my alternator

I'm looking at upgrading my alternator to something with more amps. I have 6 kc lights that I'm running now so I think I'll need it when I go to use em more. I am aware of the 160A 01-06 Durango upgrade but through the search function on this forum, I am unable to find out if it will work on my 99 4.0L. Will it? If not, any other options I have other than the expensive 'buy the Mean Green one' option?
