regear for 32's??
 
so I have a friend who just bought a 2001 tj, he got the 4cyl with the 5speed. he's putting a 2" spacer lift and a 1" body on it and wants to get 32" tires for it. do you guys think that he'll have to regear?? If so to what and where is the best place to get gears?

do you know what he has now, if he has 3.07's he will probably want to, but nothing is really necesary, really it just to make it easier drving not shifting and get more top speed

if he has 3.73's he'll be fine though

They didn't use 3.07's with the 4cyl... just 3.73 and 4.10's

4.88 would prolly be the best bet unless he can live with it for a while as he'll more than likely upgrade tire size later on and have to regear again.

where is a good place to get gears that low and what kinda pricing is he looking at? how hard is it to do yourself? if he decided to go with 33's would 4.88's work as well?

takes some special tools, patience, and definitely some experience. i would not attempt this alone unless he has experience with it.

If you are doing it the first time without someone that has done several successful sets already then i'd say that it's pretty easy to get them wrong.

If you havent done them before than I wouldnt suggest trying to. Jus thave a shop do it, you'll be much happeir. Also, if he ever goes to 33's than 4.88's should be alright. I have 33's and 4.88's with the I6 and its perfect so he may be a little under powered but not bad at all.

That's the $64 question! My vote is for 5.13s if you have an auto and 4.88s with a manual.

I thought that if the original gears were 3.73s, you have to buy a new carrier or run a spacer. The 4.10s should use the same carrier as the lower gears.

What he means is that the Dana 30 cannot run 5.13 R&P. D35's and D44's can, but not the 30.

Becasue the ring gets too thin correct? It becomes too weak with the added teeth and less metal. Since its in a smaller axle there isnt enough room to make it strong enough. Thats what I understand. Is that correct?

Correct - there is just not enough contact between the teeth to warrant a good strong contact.

The 2000 4 cyl has 4.10's. 4.56's are plenty for 32's but 4.88's wont hurt you either.

so then rubis can run 5.13's right since they have the 44 up front

not sure if hes got a rubi, but he wont want 5.13's for 32's anyways

no he just has the 01 SE, if I'm not mistaken I don't think that they came out with the rubi till '03

Yes you are correct. Rubicons can run 5.13's due to having Dana 44's front and rear. This is actually becoming the gear of choice for rockcrawlers running front D44's with 35's and 37's.

You are also correct. DC did not start putting D44's in the front of TJ's until 2003 with the inception of the Rubicon model.
