Remove soft top frame from Jeep

I've never tried this before, I always assumed it would be simple. It looks simple. It isn't simple.:banghead:

I want to remove the soft top completely. I thought I could just pull the 4 torx head bolts out of the knuckles, then yank the top, frame and all.
BUT, I can't get the knuckles to come off of the roll bar mounts. Is there a trick to this?
I really don't want to buy the "quick disco knuckles", this isn't something I plan to do very often.
Thanks in advance for any help.:)

( I did a search, all I found was one thread mentioning "breaking" the knuckles off, then buying the quick disco's. )

All you have to do is use a flathead screwdriver and pry them open just a bit. There is a built-in lip that captures the tab from the inside of the slot on the plastic connectors. They are stiff, but they won't break. I do the bottom first and push down to release them.... then the tops...I pull out to the rear.

Once you do one side completely, move to the other... then grab the entire top and support it and slide it to the rear and you're done.

That's exactly what I had to do. You see, there's a brass blind nut inside that knuckle and it's spinning inside there now. I have a hard top too so the quick dosconnect knuckles made more sense for me. YMMV. :)

I used to unscrew the mount from the roll bar, but my LJ just has one to pop off. Once you pop them on and off a few times they are much easier.

Awesome, thanksTNDZ :thumb:
I tried prying a little, but I was afraid I'd crack it. Guess I'll give it a little more "finesse is for pansies" technique and try again :D

Just give them a hit with your hand. The will pop off.

I actually wiggled the flathead screwdriver in from one side, then angled it until the screwdriver tip went thru the metal mounting hole, and used it to push the other side out a little, then they popped right off :thumb:

Yep, I remember seeing your thread when I did my search. Needless to say I was really glad when all 4 of the screws came out on mine:D
