northern MI

any good areas?

rcharlier 07-06-2011 07:17 PM

How far north, upper peninsula or just the northern part of the lower peninsula?

In the northern part of the lower peninsula, there are a lot of state trails around Houghton Lake and Higgins Lake in Roscommon County. You can get trail maps from the state website here: DNR ORV/ATV Redirect

ha yep exactly where im at, houghton lake area.. have you been on the trails around there, are they any good?
is there any dunes close by roscommon area to ride on?

jeli2657 07-06-2011 08:32 PM

Not sure about dunes but check out the St Helen scramble area. I am actually looking into buying a cabin in St Helen maybe we can meet up sometime

Also when I was last around that area the gas stations had local trail maps that weren't on the dnr website. Check out a bp and ask around in the local hardware stores. There are a lot of local unmarked trails that only the locals know about

jmt27 07-06-2011 10:11 PM

i heard alot of trails are getting closed around here though is that true?

Well, the state seems to be cracking down on guys that are out tearing up state land. I'm a lifetime Roscommon co. res. How is your jeep set up(capability)? I see your interested in sand but what other wheelin are ya into?

jmt27 07-27-2011 12:30 PM

My jeeps still stock haven't got the extra money to put wht I want on it n don't want to go over the top because i do a lot of highway driving. I would like to just have a good time n just drive the jeep I'm open to anything, I love going though puddles n wht not but nothing too crazy lol

just grab a GPS, head out to the dirt roads, and find some two tracks. there are a lot of fun two tracks, trails and logging roads all around that area. Between Harrison and Houghton lake there are lots, along the Muskegon river especially. i was just up there a few weeks ago with the jeep. Also, there is Rocks and Valleys Offroad Park in Harrison, only open on weekends. You can have fun there all day in a stock jeep...plus it's fun watching all the crazy rigs. As far as dunes... there is of course Silver Lake, over in Mears on Lake Michigan (maybe 2 hours from Houghton Lake tops). This area is very popular here in MI, just check out the MI DNR website or go to www.thinkdunes.com for info. I've been going there for about 30 years (and I'm only 33 years old). It's a great place for cruising the sand. A lot of cruising around, relaxing and watching the high dollar vehicles and crazies. There is also a sand hill called Bull Gap just east of Mio (north of St Helen and Hale) that is open to all vehicles. Honestly...this aint much. I guess it used to be more open... but they've closed most of it off so now so it's just one hill climb. I've been there on my quad, and I can walk right up it, no big deal. Not sure about the jeep. Sorry about the novel here...but lot's of good stuff in Northern Lower MI :)

Lots of trails around the Cadillac area in the Manistee National Forest. You can pick up trail maps at the local U.S. Forest Service station in Cadillac. I also highly suggest checking out Blessing of the Jeeps every year around the end of April, beginning of May near Mesick.

Thousands of fellow Jeepers gathering together in one spot. Beginner, intermediate, and expert driving courses. Huge mud pit which is always entertaining. Some Jeep vendors bring products out to sell. Usually Jeep has some of there concoctions and concept vehicles on display. Prizes being raffled off and a huge blessing to all the Jeeps. In the last two years that I have gone to it it's been awesome. Oh forgot about the huge Jeep parade and the trail rides they do the next day. The next Blessing is Saturday May 5th, 2012. It's put on by the Cadillac Jeepers!
