Honest Gas Mileage

Just bought a 2004 Wrangler Sport. Please tell me that they get better gas mileage than what I am getting, 12 mpg !?
60,000 miles..I am going to change the plugs, etc, but wanted to know how much improvement I should expect after I do this tune-up? Love my Jeep !

Tj Bunch 08-02-2007 04:48 PM

Little my 01' gets between 16-18mgg on a good day and thats with crappy Cali. gas She's a Super Low output 4 squirel.

Plugs and wire's may help but don't expect Honda milage it ain't gonna happen, I was thrilled to get 17 when I went from 9mpg and thought I was in heaven....LoL

emills 08-02-2007 04:54 PM

I would get 15 to 16 when it was mostly freeway miles. Now that I am mostly city streets - I get 12 to 13.

That is for an 06 LJ with just a tad over 20k.

honest gas mileage

Bunch, thanks for the response. Mine is a straight 6 4.0..
just got it 2 weeks ago. I'm just hoping to hear that I should be getting better than the 12....

Levinoss 08-02-2007 05:00 PM

There are afew mods such as cold air intake/throttle body spacer ect that people claim will get you a lil more gas milage. Wouldent hurt to try that. Other claim they do nothing, so its really up to you.

Just dont push down on that pedal that makes the jeep go faster as hard and it should improve some. =P

Keeping your highway speed at 55 mph can improve you gas mileage by as much as 25%, compared to 75 mph. (Yeah, I know--this one's tough for us too)
Never heard of this one but im gonna give it a try.

LoL Need to install one of those electric fans on the top right of your windshield like they used to have on buses, for the drivers.

Also going to have agreat deal to do with just how hard you drive it. If you're driving it like a sports car, you won't do so well.

LITTLEMAX 08-02-2007 05:30 PM

thanks for all the responses........I have had my foot on the pedal a little heavy....lol. I have a F250 Diesel 7.3 that I was driving, bought the Jeep to get better gas mileage......lol...the diesel is getting 16 mpg.....Jeep is more fun, and as my wife says, "it's a man thing".....

Yea, I tend to stomp on the gas a lil also. I cant help it, must be the jeep in the blood.

Don't feel bad. I'm pullin like 9 with my 35's on it. :D Don't care though. Didn't buy it for the mileage. Bought it to drive over shit. :D

JCS05Rubi 08-02-2007 06:28 PM

Honest? 16.5 top on, 11-12 top off, driving fuel concious. I have seen 9 in my Jeep before. Top off, driving normal etc.

Mines a stock rubi.

2much 08-02-2007 07:52 PM

yeah i get between 12 and 14 with my top off, and I have 33's a six cylinder, and I keep my foot in the gas pretty good. Do you have bigger tires, if so your calculations a skewed.

Walkeraviator 08-02-2007 07:54 PM

I average 17 or so. I-6 Automatic 3-spd w/3.07 gears on 215/75r15. I drive like someone 30 years older than me.... I spent all my lead foot in my civic with a stick and coilovers.

Depending on how you drive you may see a gain of 3-4 mpg realistically. For the 4.0 engine, I think 15-16mpg is about average. Keep in mind, you are basically driving a brick. I hope you didn't buy it for the gas mileage! :)

My '00 Sport gets 10mpg with 33's and a 5 speed, stock gears. But I am a bit heavy on the go go pedal. ;)

binaryking 08-02-2007 08:42 PM

I get 17.6 with my 02 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 V8. That's with the AC on.

dbwvu 08-02-2007 09:03 PM

I guess Im lucky, my 97 4.0 gets 18 if I keep my foot out of it and putt around town. I even have a bad 02 sensor and no mods

JeepCrawler98 08-02-2007 09:13 PM

I got back from a trip to CO and back a few weeks ago - 23/24 hours of interstate/country road driving (excluding the all day wheeling trips) It consistently averaged 20-22mpg based on my GPS's odometer (VERY accurate), pushing the engine as hard as it will go. On other trips if I took it real easy I've been able to push 25mpg.

Around town it'll get about 17 or 18 or so.

2.5L, 33"s, STOCK gearing :flipoff:

debruins 08-02-2007 09:20 PM

in my 1955 i get 6 mpg and about 50mpq (miles per quart)

but thats a really old motor that isnt tuned and it is well old!!!!

you should get better then 12 though, like 15-18 is regular

I watched a Mythbusters who did several tests with/without a/c and with windows up/down and they determined there was no discernible difference. So who knows.

Hell, just try no AC in Aug in TX...with the windows up. Yeah right.

I did my own test like this once in my Grand Prix. I got better fuel with teh A/C on and teh windows up, than I did with the windows down. I assume air resistance hurts more than the little power lost through the belt at the compressor. Windows down about 27MPG. Windows up and A/C running... 31MPG
