Are my springs worn out, or is this standard?
 
I recently had 4 people in my jeep, running a soft top and nothing else major to add much weight (hi-lift in the back). I was going down a small and very mild trail at a very slow speed. Over a few bumps we could feel the rear suspension starting to bottom out. i had about 750ish pounds of people in the jeep. should the rear springs really be that weak?

id hate to have passengers inn the jeep at the dunes or somewhere a little more extreme.

If this sounds like they are worn out should i just buy new replacement springs? or does it sound like I need an upgrade? maybe buy a OME 2.5 spring lift and get some beefier springs? im willing to sacrifice a bit of ride comfort for some ability to have a load in the jeep. I just thought it was sad, i have had small trucks (dakota 2 wheeldrive) loaded with 2 atvs in the rear and was able to get around over some choppy roads with no problems.

It could be worn out shocks. Upgrading to gas shocks would be a huge improvement.

That doesn't sound to terribly abnormal for a 2001 with stock springs on 31's. You could get longer bump stops to prevent that. Those springs are 10 years old at this point though, so they've seen a lot of time on the road.

Well, eventually Id like to lift my jeep. I had been looking at the skyjacker BB with new shocks. would buying new OEM springs when doing this lift be beneficial? since the springs are 10 years old, or would this not help much? Or should I scrap this idea and step up to a 2 inch spring lift and get heavier springs that are slightly stiffer then stock shocks(while also replacing the shocks)?

maybe something like these with new shocks? instead of a BB since my springs are old and worn out?

Shocks should be used to dampen the axle movement after hitting bumps or dips, not for supporting the weight of the vehicle. If you need more weight carrying capacity upgrade the springs.

Most lift kit manufaturers offer stiffer springs. Iwouldn't know where to go though, my rear springs are already to stiff...

Ebay and see if you can find a set of lj non rubi springs. I don't remember all of the part #s but i did some research on this and my 06 came with the stiffest factory springs offered all the way around.

I like the idea of the LJ springs for the rear. maybe find some cheap LJ springs and slap the BB from skyjacker on. or maybe all i need is new springs, like the link i posted above. or maybe stiffer lifted springs like OME offers.

Correct and if the shocks are worn badly enough you can bottom out as the OP described. What he is calling bottoming out could actually be his shocks completely depressing.

Shocks could help some, but honestly the spring rate of the stock coils is not truly designed for that much load over anything but a crack in the blacktop.

What I did to solve this problem was put AirLift air bags in my rear coils. It made a world of difference and solved that problem 100%. Then I swapped axles and couldn't use them anymore with the way that my lower spring mount is now set up. I miss them immensely.

So, here's your solution: since you're local in Howell, make a quick trip to East Lansing and you can have my lightly used air bags. I'll even fish the air lines out from my Jeep and you can reuse those if you wish. All you'd need to complete the job is the clamps to put the hose to the air bag, which you can get from AirLift in person if your auto parts store doesn't have a suitable substitute, since AirLIft based here in Lansing. Just shoot me a PM if you're interested.


If you elect to go with springs, the 2" lift rear springs from BDS are 200 lb/in spring rate, which is notably stiffer than most others (~160 lb/in)

Yes, variable rate (more psi = more spring rate) helpers. You run air lines to them, and then put the fitting somewhere (I ran it inside to the wire grommet behind the rear roll bar mount). 5psi is neutral, 10-15psi levels out heavy loads. Works well for what you're trying to address.

Another set of stock springs isn't going to solve your problem, which is the inherently low rate of the factory springs irrespective of which spring code # you have or swap in.

I switched to an OME lift and the heavier springs--which are s'posed to be for a hardtop or heavier loads/bumpers/jacks over size tires on the rear carrier--so much better than stock was!!!! I switched because the stock springs were starting to sag--enough I could see it.

Best mod I have done to the Jeep I think ---well at least today I think it is---I like everything about my JEEP!! :)
