While I'm waiting for the new ballancer to get here, I thought about switching (pun) to an electric fan for the ol' 2.5. Has anyone done this ?

I've done it on my 4.0. I've had nothing but problems with it. I've gone through 3 fan motors now but it's on a lifetime warranty so they replace them for free. I still have to do the work and worry about getting it home. I break them when offroading. If you are planning on offroad adventures, I'd say pass on it.

Thanx...mine is a bone stock city dweller. I've heard/read that stock fans take about 10-12 HP away from the engine. 2.5s only have about 20 HP anyway LOL. That number sounds high but I have it apart with time to kill !!

I heard that also but I did not notice much of a difference. If you put in some fresh spark plugs and wires, you may feel the same performance change as putting on the electric fan :)

I've done it and it's been fantastic. I put a giant Lincoln Mark VIII fan inside of the stock fan shroud and controlled it with a Flex-A-Lite variable controller. It hasn't given me any problems and I like that it turns on the fan at 60% when the AC is running and has the ability to turn it on or off via switches. It also has a soft start feature so there isn't much risk of blowing fuses.
Now, that being said, I did the electric fan so that I could turn it off for water crossings. If I didn't plan on that, then I would have just stayed stock or upgraded the mechanical fan/clutch with something bigger. There's a thread on another jeep forum about using Ford Explorer and Mustang fan/clutch combos for increased cooling that sounds interesting.

Hmm, I had to check. Good catch. You're right.
It looks like it's for Grand Marquis and Town Cars. The part number is 8W1Z 8C607 B. The Mark VIII is F3LY-8C607-A. I bought the brand new OEM fan shroud/motor off of ebay and removed the motor/blade and then put it in an old junkyard shroud that fit the blades/ I did this because I wasn't able to cut the original shroud in any way to make it fit well. This was then mounted inside of the stock Jeep fan shroud which had to be cut at the top a bit to make it fit.
The fan blades are a little less than 18". It sucks in so much air that I can feel it pulling air through the grill from about a foot away. I haven't had any cooling issues since installation.
