Interior Ambient Light

Ive seen some photos on different forums and over the internet on ambient lighting for Wranglers, some are cool and some have looked like a 5 year old took a neon light and put it under the dash. I was curious to see if anyone had any cool interior ambient lighting mods like they have on BMW's Fords VW's or Mercedes.

Pull the top off; that lets all sorts of interesting ambient light in!

I don't have my '12 yet so can't comment on the ambient light situation in Wranglers, but my Lotus Elise had ZERO light. At night, I could basically see nothing. Imagine stopping hard, phone goes flying. Good luck finding it.

So, I had the stereo shop that did my system install some led lighting on an actuator. It's the cool white color and is hidden (under dash/behind seats). Looks OEM and NOT ricey at all. Basically, it allows me to see inside the car at night - a novel idea. My desired effect was utility, not 'mood lighting'

I have no idea how to wire it in/etc, but any stereo shop of repute should be able to add led lighting at a reasonable price (the LED and transformers are cheap and labor shouldn't take long).

Not a jeep, but these are $20 at autozone or advanced auto parts. An led strip real easy to wire in on a switch or splice into existing wires. Attaches with a 3m strip adhesive on the back. I also put a set of these in an old vw cabriolet. They look good to me and they are really bright.

I put some here LED strip from pepboys tied it into the light switch behind the window controls (orange wire)

I installed the Mopar ambient light kit in my 2007 Sahara and love it. It looks great when the top is down and driving at night. Unfortunately, I don't think it is available anymore. It was Mopar part number 82211607AD.

That looks awesome :)

I bought 4 - plain white flexible LED strips from ebay. I am going to put one under both front seats, and one under the dash in both foot-wells. I plan to trace down the dome light wire under the dash to tap into.

Just got to watch blue or red lights, some states are strict on that if they can see it from outside the vehicle.

Correct. Had my dealer parts guy research this and for whatever reason Mopar has made it unavailable.

volfireman07 07-15-2011 12:19 PM

I did a search for "82211607AD". It looks like some aftermarket places have them for ~ $250.

Isnít ambient light a natural light source and not interior lighting?
:)

No ambient means it lights a large space. Not a specific spot. So like the floor lights light up the whole floor pan. So it's ambient.

1222 07-15-2011 02:50 PM

Ok gotcha, thanks.

I thought Ambient Light was a low calorie beer.

Thats some serious coin for a strip of lights under the dash!

DonC72 07-15-2011 09:51 PM

Citronella sticky pots are so much cheaper. :)

SilverSport 07-15-2011 10:01 PM

Probably smell better too.

DonC72 07-15-2011 10:05 PM

Yes, but i have to get out of the burn unit in order to verify. ;)

Rockjaw 07-21-2013 09:12 AM

I stuck a match down the fuel tank and produced a terrific all round glow!

Looks like the inside of a M1A1 Tank.............

Afmcronnie 07-28-2013 05:42 PM

I solved the ambient light problem by trading my 2012 for a 2013. My JKUS has a dim floor light whenever the lights are on, and a bright courtesy light when the interior lights are on. Problem solved.
