steel wheels versus aluminum wheels...

other than price..i was curious as to the advantages or disadvantages of one over the other...

we were thinking of M/T Classic or Classic Locks..but then we're kind of looking at black on the white SE, and the Crager Soft 8's i saw in another post looked kinda enticing!

any advice appreciated

AzTJ 08-08-2007 09:26 PM

Its just a matter of preference really. I wanted a trick looking aluminum wheel, so thats what I got... and I paid about $100 each. But if I knew I was going to be bashing on the rocks all the time, I would have gotten steel wheels, because of the cheap prices. But since my rig is a 75% daily driver, I went for it and got the aluminum ones.

There is no comparison

Alloy > Steelies

There are only 3 pro's to running black steelies.

1. Less likely to be stolen (only if they want your tires)
2. Having to beat your rim back into shape with a hammer so it will hold air really amuses your friends (ask me how I know this)
3. non-jeepers think you're hardcore when you park at the mall

Just say no to the cheap @ss steely fad.
Most people buy them for that "hardcore" look, when all it really says is "I couldn't afford real wheels for my Jeep"
They bend easy, they look and balance like crap. Especially with an interco tire around them. Which are a great tire, just not the best balancing things.

This can go either way and I've been looking at the M/T classic also, but I think I'm leaning towards the black steelies for now and possibly upgrading later.

If you buy alloys now you dont have to spend money to upgrade later :)

Scout 08-08-2007 09:54 PM

Steel.

Sorry Scoob. :D

True, so that's why I was asking about painting the stock rims black for now and buying the M/T's but w/ the red locks

MT's are nice rims, I love mine. I got the regular classic II's though.

Scout 08-08-2007 10:08 PM

You suck. And so do aluminum wheels. :flipoff: :D:D:D

"W4MAC" 08-08-2007 11:29 PM

Well, being in the tire and wheel buisness, I like the alloys for several reasons. Main one is a steel wheel isn't strait when I take it out of the box. They are flat pieces of steel, wrapped around a barrel mold, and welded. Then get a plate welded in the center, somewhat strait. Alloys are cast one piece, then machined on a lathe. Alloys always balance better, run truer, look better, and shine like a new dime when polished. Steel wheels just look cheap the day you put em on. Just my humble opinion.

If I didn't wheel on and around sharp / jagged rocks I would have some nice wheels on mine. Since I run the risk of wheel damage every other month I'll have to stick with the steelies.

George T. 08-09-2007 07:35 AM

do they make black alloys?

Scout 08-09-2007 07:37 AM

Yes they do.

yeah, you can get cast black. i got some nice black ones with a silver outter ring, look pretty good i think. some pics are:
http://www.wranglerforum.com/general...y-5165-70.html

and from what ive heard alloy is the way to go if your not clawing over rocks. no only because of all the different reasons above (welded, not one cast piece, bend easy, all that stuff), but also because they are HEAVY. i mean they are a lot heavier than alloy wheels and in turn, take more braking/stopping power just becuase there's more weight being spun around then on an alloy. so in my opinion, if your not rock crawling, go with the alloys.

Oh man, if he respected and agreed with your opinion you'd BOTH be wrong LOL, steel all the way unless you have the bucks for the hot forged aluminum ones, those are the best of both worlds.

Walkeraviator 08-09-2007 08:22 AM

Yeah...for a newlie wed guy workin in the early stages of a career in aviation... I HAVE to go with steelies. They are my only hope of afforing something better than stock and still have enough money left to buy some tires.

4.0l sahara 08-09-2007 09:15 AM

Steel cheap and HOT looking!!!!!!!!!!!:flipoff:

2002Apex 08-09-2007 02:23 PM

Do black m/t classic 2's exist or are they a custom thing. Ive seen them before on a vehicle but i didnt know if they powder coated them or what?

AzTJ 08-09-2007 04:33 PM

IT would be a custom thing. But ProComp has some wheels that look a little like the CLassic 2's that are black.

kbak303 08-09-2007 04:36 PM

those are the exact wheels i just got... i got them for cheaper than that through a seller on ebay called sports trailerz i think... i cant remember, ill look for the info. anyway, i got those wheels in 15x8's, 5 of them for 475 shipped... thats damn good if you ask me for some alloy wheels, but then i paid an extra like 35 or 40 for the lug nuts, but i like them. like them a lot

jjseel 08-10-2007 03:25 AM

I like the black steelies! I have alloys, cuz I got a smokin' deal. If I could afford it, though, I would buy the black, Teflon coated ones - SWEET! Alloys are better IMHO, but I love the understated look. (white letters in!)
