Fuel tank skid plate
 
Hi, has anyone got any tips / things to watch out for when removing the fuel tank skid plate on a 1998 TJ Wrangler.
My skid plate is a bit beat and could do with a tidy up!

Haven't removed one yet myself, but I hear a transmission jack is great for this sort of thing. Also keep in mind how much gas you have in it; I'd try and use as much of it as you can so the tank isn't so heavy. Kinda common sense but a good many people seem to forget about it.

If you end up looking to replace the stock skid with an aftermarket one, take a look at Savvy's gas tank skid (savvyoffroad.com). It comes with all new hardware and straps as well so if you're hardware is as bad as the rest of the plate you won't have to worry about reusing it.

1. Get as much gas out as possible.
2. Disconnect fuel lines BEFORE lowering it. :)
3. Loosen all nuts before removing any of them.
4. Get floor jack in place and raise it to meet the gas skid.
5. Remove nuts slowly. Having a friend steady the tank will help.
6. Lower jack/tank and pull out from under vehicle.

Installation is reverse of above.

With the tank out, it is a perfect time to do any rear axle work (shocks, track bar, diff fluid, etc). LOTS of room to work that way. :)

Be prepared to break the gas tank strap stud.

There are also a couple of wire connectors up there you want to disconnect too.

Forgot about that. I disconnect them when I do the fuel lines. They have a bit of slack in them. The fuel lines really don't. I guess that's why I remembered the fuel lines and forgot about the wiring. :)

Be careful with fuel line disconnects at the sending unit. If you break anything on it you will have two problems
1. Finding a sending unit because you can't replace the piece you broke by itself.
2. Paying for the sending unit. They are quite pricey.

Also, use a floor jack to control lifting and lowering the tank/skid assembly and get someone to help you.

Also, be careful not to break the plastic "Y" in the vacuum lines on top. You will have to reattached the ground strap somehow, easy to break off.

Pretty easy did it by myself with a floor jack and a piece of wood to distribute the weight. After all the bolts are out you can lower it like 5 to 6 in. so you can reach the connections...remember the screws at the fuel fillercap

Don't forget to remove your gas cap and remove the bolts that hold the filler neck in place. There is also a ground strap down there somewhere. Stuff a rag in the fuel fill hole to keep the rust and dirt out when lowering the tank. I thought it would be a good idea to keep the fuel cap on.... then I broke it. Lesson learned, I will use a rag the next time.
