Fuel Consumption After Regearing To 4.56 ?
 
Hello,

this winter I want to reagear from 3.07 to 4.56.

With the 3.07 gears and my 32s the TJ is very slow. In the City i need to press the gas pedal more than 1/2 to be as fast as other small cars. With myold TJ with 3.07 gears and stock 215/75r15 tires i only had to touch the pedal a bit and was faster than the others.
On the highway with 65 mph my TJ drives in 4th gear and OD with only 1800 UPM and i have to pres the gas pedal more than 50% to hold the speed. If it goes up only a little bit or if there is some wind or if i want to accellerate a bit the auto tranny shifts down in the 3rd gear. Speeds over 75 mph are only possible in 3rd gear.

My actual mileage is 10 mpg in the city and 13 mpg with constant 65 mph on the highway.

Could you please tell my how the fuel cosumption would be after regearing to 4.56? In the City? And on the highway?

probably better than now since you won't be gassng it as much.

4.56 with 32's is pretty low though...many people run 33's with 4.56 though...so its only an inch

it should be a lot better, you wont need to be on the gas as much to keep speed

It will be better, but it wont be as good as stock. Id say, you will probably be in Rubicon range. I am only saying that, because Rubicons are just a tad bit over geared from the factory. There are also rumors that it was meant to have 33s, and changed to 31s last minute, thus the over-gearing.

4.56 and 32s is about the same as 4.11 and 31s, maybe a little bit more over geared. Since you have an auto, it will probably be a lot better, but with a stick, I am cranking like 2600 rpms+ for 65 mph.

Either way, your gas mileage will increase because you will be able to baby it again. It will also drive a lot easier, and have much more power than it did before. With 4.56 and 32s, you should be able to actually use 4th again. Also, from what I remember reading but don't quote me, with 4.56 and and auto, you are at the perfect gearing for 33s, so there is room to upgrade :D

a friend works at yokohama germany and will buy them for me in november. for only 1/3 of the normal price.

im born here and i´m a german.
but i worked in the US for years and still visit the US 3-4 times a year.

I wish I had the 4 speed over drive tranny
Although with the three speed my gas milage did increase
when I took out the 3.07 gears and replaced them with the 4.56 gears
after you change them youl notice that you can keep up with the other cars

I have a 2005 Rubicon with 4:56 gears. I live at sea level and get 12 city and 14 hwy. When I drive out of state, at 4000 to 7000 foot altitudes, I get 16-18 mpg average. ?? No body can explain why.

It's the density of the air. Denser air burn better, thus hotter, thus more power, which all equates to the engine not working as hard to preform the same task. :D

And see Nick, I don't feel dumb anymore, I'm not the only one that asks why you're in Germany.

I've always been under the impression that 4.56 w/ 33s is the same ratio as 4.11 w/ 31 (Rubicon). Am I right or wrong? I'm hoping to get the lift in Nov. and I'm going to run 33s w/ 4.56 gears.

It's a 6spd

05 tj - 4.0L Auto. 33" tires. D30/D44. I put in 4.56 and checked my mileage on a trip using my Garmin GPS - figured it'd be more accurate than the speedometer. Right at 14 mpg.

I have stock gearing with 32 I get about 12-13 with or without top on.. makes me hate driving at times.. got to get my bike fixed for the commute next week. its pretty painful to me i am used to the 23= mpg. especially with a 19 gal. tank. I feel I pump way frequent with a 12 gal I used to have on another car.


what gearing do you guys reccomend.. I would like to have the 16+ mph I hear about on this board

That's great but the air is denser at sea level and he gets better mileage at altitude :)

It is air density. At the higher elevation, the air is less dense and hence, it takes less horse power to push it through the air.....................:rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

or the engine makes less power because of the lack of air so it sprays less fuel?
