what is this gauge??? also a question about fuel gauge

Since Ive owned the jeep this gauge/display hasnt done anything.... what is it for???

http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/j...-57-04_749.jpg

Also Ive read about the problems with the accuracy of the fuel gauge on YJ, mine is off by about 3/8ths of a tank, meaning that it stays on full for about 60 miles and is empty when it gets to about 3/8ths of a tank. Everywhere between that it reads fine- Is there an adjustment screw on the back of the stock gauge I can move? Or would I just have to replace the sending unit? Would just moving the needle itself screw the gauge up even more???

i dont know what that gauge is, but reffering to the fuel gauge don't waste your money trying to fix it because it will only break again

That just looks like an empty slot. Doesn't look like anything. But I may be wrong. Never looked in detail at a yj

It should be 3 different lights. Like Oil press, heat, etc... Been a long time since i had a YJ. I'm recalling from about 15yrs ago. Ask the YJ guys and take a better picture.

mrobison1 07-23-2011 06:22 PM

That is actually your 4wd light. When you put it into 4wd it should light up and tell you that your in 4wd. Mine didn't ever work untill I put my posi lock in and I re-wired it..

stimpy 07-23-2011 06:37 PM

Yup its your four wheel drive indicator. Its suppose to light up when your in 4 low or 4 high.

HillbillyJeeper 07-23-2011 07:08 PM

Well there ya go

There is no screw on the back of the gauge you can adjust. You can adjust the sending unit but you have to drop the tank to do it.

What year YJ is this? Mines an 89 and I don't have that gauge

Xpress 07-23-2011 09:13 PM

^This. My 89 has a temp gauge there. Then the fuel gauge, then the clock, then the oil pressure, then the voltage level.

My 1990 is the same as that but my 1995 had the gauges with the 4wd light like that in the picture.:wavey:

Mines a 93. I thought it might be the 4wd indicator. Ill put it in 4lo and hi today and see if it works. As far as the fuel gauge goes Ill just leave it alone then, I dont want to mess it up worse. Thanks guys

Your 4wd light is in the center of the dash along with the seat belt, parking brake and high beams.

So The top half lights up for The 4wd indicator, what(if anything) does The bottom half do?

BillyLA 07-24-2011 01:24 PM

First - The gauge is your 4wd indicator, the top half lights up and the bottom does nothing. Thats just the way it is. It is controlled by a vacuum switch on the passenger side of the front axel. Just putting it into 4hi or 4lo will not always engage the light, you might have to apply some accelerator to get it to come on. If that still doesnt work then either the bulb has gone or the switch is sticking.
Both easy to diagnose, try a bulb that you know works, and unscrew the switch and try pushing the nipple inside in and out to free it up.

Secondly - Fuel gauges are generally pretty rubbish, if I take a hard corner mine can go from 3/8 to empty in 2 seconds, unfortunately nobody makes a replacement sending unit for the 15 gallon tank any more. So the only option is to get a 20 gallon sending unit and install that. If you already have a 20 gallon tank you'll be fine, but if you can only ever fill her up with no more than 15 gallons you will have some work to do.

If your changing your sending unit then this will be an easy job, all YJ's from i think 92 onwards were fitted with a 20 gallon tank from factory, this made production costs lower and how they then made it a 15 gallon tank was by putting a piece of hose in the vent tube to make the pump at the station think it was full before it actually was. Anyway to fix this all you have to do is remove the piece of pipe that is slotted inside the vent tube of your gas tank (vent tube is the small one of the two on the tank). This will make your tank a 20 gal and allow you to install your nice new sending unit!

I went out and snapped a pic for you. When you put it in 4 High or 4 Low this is what it does.

BillyLA 07-24-2011 11:42 PM

thats what you want, looks like its working fine. when its not in 4hi/lo you should be able to turn the front driveshaft by hand, and when it is engaged it should not rotate.
