1990 Starting issue

I recently purchased a 1990 YJ that I am having a bit of a starting issue with. It has a 258 Inline 6. Periodically when I try to start it the engine sputters and doesn't fully engage. If I leave it for a few minutes it will typically start right up??? Not sure if it's starving for gas, getting too much or what. I have ran injector cleaner through thinking maybe that might help. This usually seems to happen when I go on short trips. Any suggestions? Love my jeep and don't want to be left stranded one day.

I did a full tune up and that seemed to have cured the problem...give that a go and see what happens. Also check the connection to the starter it can get loose sometimes - make sure u disconnect the neg from the battery ;)

Thanks we will definately try that. So far I've changed the fuel filter, ran injector cleaner through, did an oil change when I bought it. Think I will take it to the garage and see what they say. Summer is way too short to be fiddling aroud with this, I want to drive it!!

A tune-up will only help. Can you be more specific regarding how it acts cold, hot, etc. Does it do it all the time; just cold, just hot, both, sporadic. Do you know if you have an original carb. It does sound like some type of carb. issue.

Typically it does this when I take it on short drives around town then jump back in and try to start it up. If I let it sit 5-10 minutes it will start right up. Pretty sure I have fuel injection. It sounds pretty weird when it won't start almost like it's not getting enough fuel it kinda chugs like the motor is trying to go and just can't catch. One other thing i have noticed when putting in fuel I can't put it in quickly. I can only hold the gas nozle at about 1/4 flow when refueling or it kicks off. Thought that was a little strange.

So I've taken it to the shop today. The mechanic has a jeep and had the same problem. He seems to think it's wires, plugs and cap. That solved his problem so he's going to try that first. Keeping my fingers crossed!

If you have a 90 it's a carb. If you have a 91 you have FI. If it was a typo that you have a 90, disregard what I mentioned about the carb.

I guess the engine was changed and one with FI was put in (I understand your confusion my mechanice clarified for me today). Picked it up from the mechanice today and he replaced Cap and Rotors. I guess they were shot. He wants me to test it for a few days to see how things go. He's had it since Tuesday and has been testing it and said it seems to be starting fine. I've had it all afternoon and have tested it several times. Took it fueled it up, went to the market, came home and every time it's started perfectly. Fingers and toes crossed it was that simple!

So an update on the YJ. Had an overall tune up done, new plugs and wires, new cap and rotar, new distributor and then the crank sensor. IT RUNS LIKE A DREAM!!! So much more power, no missing at high speed, no backfiring. Starts every time. YIPEE!!!
