Question on black box on drivers side fender??

There is a black box on the drivers side fender with vacuum lines running to it on the front top of the black box there is a inlet or outlet with nothing on it, it is open does this nipple about 5/8 in size does it need a plug? does it take a hose? Or is supposed to be open? thanks

It's so if you crash, the people that find you will know what happened and why you crashed, then cover it all up. :D

Pictured is a California emissions Jeep - if you have a Jeep that just falls under federal emisisons you have a little purge solenoid, the big charcoal canister, a hose going in from the gas tank, and a hose going into an intake manifold vacuum port. The big 5/8" hose will have a breather cap "hat" on it.

AzTJ 08-13-2007 03:09 AM

I was gonna say, that has to be an emissions thing as mine doesn't have anything like that.

Why would I have a californa emisions jeep when this jeep was always on the east coast.

Get your build sheet from Jeep, I found out that my jeep was built in California, shipped to Hawaii, and then sold to me in Georgia...so my jeep has seen both coasts.

thanks for the info. My jeep does not have any breather cap on it, just open. would this affect vacuum on my jeep? I am having an issue with my a/c, max on the a/c will switch from front vent to defrost when on the highway. I checked everything and could not find anything else.

*ding ding*! Just because you don't live in CA doesn't mean you won't have a Jeep that doesn't meet CA emission standards :)

I dont think the breather would affect vacuum really as the assy is opened to vacuum for only very short bursts. If you are having problems with your A/C - it's likely you have a vacuum leak in the tiny, brittle, PVC hose going to the HVAC, the vacuum reservoir (below the battery), or the check valve (on the intake manifold) or with any of the vacuum switching controls (behind the dash).

If you had issues because of the breather you'd have a vacuum leak large enough to devoid your intake of enough vacuum to run some small accessories. your engine would probably be idling fairly high, in addition to running like crap, and you'd probably also have a pretty tough brake pedal.
