need help on HOUSING STEERING COLUMN removal

I am replacing the turn signal switch and the and the wiper switch on my 1989 jeep Wrangler YJ. I pulled the steering wheel removed the tun signal switch and the ignition & removed the 4 bolts then it says. then it says remove shroud however it will not come a part .

any ideas looks like a gear for the ignition and the spring loaded silver part top center of column and a rod running don the shaft are the problem :surrender: please lend a hand if you can

i have posted twice for info on turn signal lever replacement with no luck. i think what you are looking at is the steering wheel lock? check other side of steering wheel to see if it lines up?

lakey 07-31-2011 11:22 AM

were you ever able to separate the shroud ? the lock lever (Steering wheel lock) on the other side ? what should I do with that ? it looks like the ignition is connected to a rod that runs down the column and has a gear with teeth that is stopping us from removing it

This might help

I'm in the exact same situation. If anyone has any hints, please speak up! That d*mn plastic shroud will not come off for anything. The link above looks like it's for an auto with tilt (?) and is not the same animal.

still need help

That is correct the one they show is not the same as the one in my photo...any help would be much appreciated

john yerby 07-31-2011 04:13 PM

i never had the shroud off or i could not get the dam thing off (i know what i said) please when you do compleat the project let us know what and how you did it. pictures would be great. its too bad that the lever was not a big pair of boobs or hooked up to a sub woofer then everyboby would have something to say. i also have a full size bronco and when you ask questions you get 15 people who help with links or answers maybe give them a try its not uncommon for people to have both cars.

You are replacing the turn signal switch, and wiper switch (located on the turn signal stalk).

You have the old parts off already, yet your convinced you need to remove more from your Jeep?

Put the new ones on and be done with it, your doing WAY more then needed. If you think you have to remove more to run the wiring, you dont, just feed it down, it will go eventually....

That link Stimpy posted, is interesting, but they are replacing the pivot/tightening the bolts that always back out, for an adjustable steering column, you dont have all that....

UNLESS you were not clear about what you are actually after in this tear down, but from the information you provided, Id like to know WHY you want that removed, there may be a shortcut that negates you taking this off.

X2 what 2xs said....

many times, theres a little screw that holds a hinge assembly that holds it on.

then PULL the switch assembly out of the pivot.

its a GM column and they are all the same....

Problem FIXED

solved the issue last night... had to remove the entire column... then the shroud could be taken apart...sorry no photos as i was not in my garage...The shroud has screw on the underside that allow you to separate them... the rest was pretty straight forward...

reason I had to pull it down that far was the wiper switch was broken off inside the controller and the previous owner tried to repair it with GLUE... but everything is working now...this weekend brake job!

Oh Yea Thank you all for the help...

anyone have a good line on where to get the Factory Manual for a 1989 Jeep

I'm glad I found this thread. I just bought an '89 Wrangler with wipers that don't work, and it looks like I'll have to replace the wiper switch as well.
You can get the Haynes manual from several sources online. I just placed an order for a used copy of Haynes 1987-1995 Wrangler repair manual on Amazon.com.

if you can take pictures and post them this problem comes up often and will help other people.

So does anyone know how to get the bronze thing off that's under the steering wheel?

lakey 12-24-2011 03:00 PM

If you can take a pic that seems to help....if its the part the wheel attaches to you need a puller

Nikondsindent 07-06-2012 04:21 PM

Thanks this will help with my high/low beam issue

I to had to replace the wiper switch on my 1989 Wrangler. Yes you do have to remove the entire steering column from the jeep and take it apart on the bench. The plastic shroud that covers the switch can only be removed from the back side and the column has to be out to get at the screws that hold it on. To get the column out you have to remove the dash shrouds, disconnect the two wire plugs from the switches at the bottom of the column, 6 bolts where the column attaches to the floor board, the one bolt that holds the the the shafts together under the hood and the 2 bolts that hold the column to the dash. Then the column will pull out. Since you have to take pretty much the whole column apart go over everything and rebuild as needed before you put it back in.
