Evap emission control leak- code 0442

I have a check engine light on. My reader shows a code- 0442, small emission control leak. Does anyone have an idea what it might be. I already checked the gas cap. It's on my 2003 TJ, X, 4.0L, auto.

could be lots of stuff, get a smoke machine or go to a shop and have them smoke the system it will show right where the leak is

Not sure if its still located on the driver front fender on the 03's like my 01 is but I would check the lines to and from the evap canister. They are prone to cracking and causing this code.

The big hose and 2 little ones right below it!

It may not even be a leak, it could be a bad solenoid valve. Before you spend money on a pro do a quick visual inspection of all the hoses that are part of the evap system. Chrysler products of that era are pretty well known for deteriorating evap hoses. You'll probably see one or more of them that are visibly deteriorated. Give them all a squeeze, they should be firm like a normal vacuum hose. If they are soft and squishy they either need to be replaced or will need to be soon.

On my 05 the evap canister is in the passenger rear wheelwell.

It looks like my evap can is in the right rear wheel well. I'll have to look at those hoses. Thanks.

Yeah I wasn't sure when they moved it back there. Either way I know I have replaced many mopar evap hoses off the canister for the very same code so that is always were I start checking.

They can be a pain to find. First get a new gas cap for $10. That might be the issue. Next it gets more complicated. I had that code for a while after I relocated my evap canister. I smoke tested it 3x and couldn't find anything. The small leak that throws that code can be a VERY small leak. I took all my hoses off, smeared vacuum grease on them, and reinstalled them and it went away.

I replaced the gas cap, although it looked fine. I checked the hoses to the evap canister and they look good too. I pushed all the hoses on in hopes they'll seat if one was loose or something. Then I erased the code with my code reader. I guess I'll just have to wait to see if it throws the code again.

Sometimes it would take me 2 days of driving before the code would pop up. Not the quick kind of troubleshooting.

Hardermods 05-05-2013 01:58 PM

Im not sure yet on where to get it, I do know you cannot just replace the elbow OEM only sells it as the whole line set.

OEM part number is 4854133AB

Could the dealer just not find it? Try taking that number back to them and have them look it up that way

justinyancey 05-05-2013 04:15 PM

Thanks, and yeah the dealership guy had issues finding it. When I was looking online at mopar's site, I thought this may be it but wasn't sure. Thanks for the info!
