Best Way To Fix Scratches On Paint
Well, I was thinking about touching up the body of my Jeep soon. In various spots on the body I have some scratches, small rust spots, and spider cracks. With the scratches, some are just minor but I do have one scratch that's pretty deep, and long (probably about a foot). Also, I have some small spots where the paint has chipped off and there is now rust. What would be the best way to go about fixing that? Also, I'm not sure if this is exclusive to my Jeep, but I have some large spider cracks around my gas cap...anyways, what would be the best way to go about fixing these? Could I just buy some PYH Solar Yellow paint and spray it on after sanding down the rust/scratch? And if I did that, would it look bad if some of the paint overlapped onto the old paint? As you can tell I'm deffinately not an expert at car paint...haha. Any advice is welcome. Thanks. :)

ouch, those cracks look like a mess =(

but what about the other minor spots erinb talks about?
Can you go to the Mopar dealer and pick up a small thing of touch up paint?

Have you taken a magnet to that area around the gas cap? Could be deeper than the paint. May be that the area was repaired and the metal was smoothed out with bondo.

^^ My thoughts too. Paint will not crack like that unless it is 1/8 inch thick or bondo.

Hmm, I don't know. They were there when I bought it, and the people I bought it from don't know how they got there either (only owners). They assumed it was from the hot oklahoma sun. Haha

If previous owners could be believed, every jeep ever sold 2nd hand had spent it's entire life in a garage, and was never taken off road...

X2, take it from someone who's run body shops for a long time. That's prior body work/bondo failures you are looking at.

You are looking at some serious time and bucks to correct that. Remove the paint and old bondo, hopefully not have to correct previous repairs, rebondo it, prime, paint/clearcoat.

Easy fix would be some corner armor, maybe some bed liner in other areas. Just cover it and forget until you you are ready for real body work and paint.

That's a serious problem there. Cracks like that are going to cause some serious rust. Take a small flat head, shove it in a crack and chip a piece off to see how bad it is. Your best option is strip the panel from seam to seam and have it redone. Or strip it down, treat bare metal, and throw some armor over it.

Just covering it like that is an utterly horrible idea.

Also IMO that doesn't look like body filler cracking. Not sure what would cause that, but it doesn't look like cracked filler.

For an easy(er) fix just knock it all off with a screwdriver sand it down, primer and herculine the whole thing! If you have a nasty dent some body armor after that should cover most of it. But yeah, it's bondo...
