trying to upgrade, advice?

ok so my 95 wrangler just has the stock 2.5 4-cyl with the AX-15 trans now i want to put a bigger engine in it thinking a mopar engine or trying to fit a cummins into it just for a little better gas mileage, the thing is i dont know if a 400 big block with fit within the engine bay. and if ill need a completely new transmission or if i can rebuild the AX-15 and match the two. advice?

If you search the forums, you'll find plenty of information. The most common V8 swaps are to Chevy engines. The most common diesel swap is to a Cummins 4BT. Since you're going to be cutting out and rewelding motor mounts, have you considered a stroked Jeep 4.0L?

Do some searching of the forums and a bit of Googling and you'll find more info than you could ever want.

now will the 4BT give me any more power as well, i mean yea its much stronger than the stock 2.5, and with the removing of the motor mounts arent there the attachments that modify your mounts to fit what is going there or is it that problem that causes how far down the engine has to be?

people have fit viper engines in the jeeps engine bay, it can fit about everything

my trans is the AX-15 as far as i can tell i was looking over it and was told it was but i cant really tell. there a way to tell right away which one it is?

The 4 cylinders came with the AX-5 transmission. If it is a stock jeep drivetrain, it will be an AX5.

well the guy i bought it from was a liar then haha thanks, would you recommend swaping in the AX15 for bigger engines?

Xpress 08-11-2011 01:18 PM

ABSOLUTELY. The AX5 can barely handle the 4 cylinder. No way it could handle anything bigger. Not to mention the shaft splines are different on the bigger engines.

so with AX15 what would the biggest engine it could handle, i was thinking about rebuilding a 400 big/small block and poping that sucker in

Xpress 08-11-2011 07:57 PM

I dunno about a 400... I'm not entirely a transmission officianado though.
