Toolbox for your Wrangler

Does anyone know where I can find a toolbox that would fit in the trunk of my Wrangler? I would keep the backseat in the Jeep. All I would need the toolbox for would be hand tools. Thanks in advance

Turtles TJ 08-10-2011 06:14 PM

what type of selection for handtools are you looking for?

Effisimo 08-10-2011 06:20 PM

I want something that would lock and be able to bolt into the back of the jeep. Preferably made of a strong metal.

Turtles TJ 08-10-2011 06:27 PM

i meant how big a selection of hand tools do you want in there? If you get something that is 14wx8dx12h, you'll be good. Just go to Home Depot, find one you like and take the measurements...

but have fun bolting it in as the gas tank is DIRECTLY below the trunk

Effisimo 08-10-2011 06:33 PM

Oops. I just need something about the dimensions you listed. Maybe just a little bit taller. I have tool bags and a small klein toolbag. Thanks for the advice I will check home depot tomorrow. I knew bolting it down would be a nightmare. I was hoping I could get the box and maybe find a way.

You can always use 2 50 cal ammo boxes on either side of an 81mm box. I know there is a posting on here somewhere about it. The 50 cals can be used for tools and liquis and the 81 for snatch strap, hoses, and other stuff. I will try to find the link for it.

Does this guy have an email address or website?

Johnboy11 08-10-2011 07:13 PM

not that I know of. The boxes are at the Conoco station there. different sizes and prices. I will as kmy GF for the number and post it on here. They are waterproof also rubber seal on inside of lid.

If you go up to 14" taller, you will be almost to top of back seat.

Got and idea for bolting it in. get a piece of angle iron from Home Depot. The stuff thats about 2 inches wide with the holes in it. Bend it into a square with three sides, leave 4th side open. Id personally use 4 pieces bent like this, 2 on each side. Drill hole in the side of the box (near the bottom, almost to the floor of toolbox). bolt angle iron to the box. Then run to the wheel well. Drill hole in wheel well (you can remove wheel well liner to get at other side. Bolt through angle iron AND wheel well. Then you can use short (3/4") self tapping screws with washers and go through the holes in the angle iron into the tub (screws short enough not to penetrate the gas tank, I used to mount my amps under back seat), this will keep slack out of the angle iron and prevent tool box from bouncing.

Here's a rough idea. Sides are Wheel Wells, Red is Tool Box, Blue is Angle Iron. Black is screws and bolts

Dang, a .50 cal ammo can in great condition is a $3.00 item. For $10.00 you can buy brand new Mark 19 ammo cans without a scratch on them. If ammo cans are bring that much up North I think I will make a trip with a truck load, most of which I got for free....

i thought this one was pretty cool.

I went to home depot and nothing they had would work for what I need.

Plan B.........................
Has anyone ever mounted some metal over the trunk and bolt the metal down on the top of the fender wells? This way if you lock the trunk everything would be secure and out of sight.

ctbrown1976 08-11-2011 09:33 PM

The PO of my jeep had installed an "insta-trunk" which is essentially what you are talking about building. It does the job and is pretty secure with the gate locked but I would recommend something waterproof if you can.

I use a Kolpin atv front hard sided box. It fits snug behind the rear seat, it's lockable, and you could drill a couple holes and bolt it to the floor.

I found a 3 drawer craftsman tool box for about $35 that fits nicely. 1 drawer is a box set of english sockets and english wrenches, another is metric socket set and wrenchs, last is hammer and 3 adjustable wrenches. Top is allen and torx hand tools, a can of spray lube for when the doors come off or go on, screw drivers, work gloves, and anything else small I just throw in there. Recovery gear and anything else just goes next to the tool box.

Jeep_VT 08-12-2011 08:48 AM

I got this box, and I love it, but i currently don't have my back seat in. I think, i might be able to make it fit with the back seat, but i will need to drill some additional holes in the tub. (Right now i'm using the seat holes) I love it. It's the width of the tub, and a very nice height! http://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/...t/IMG_0478.jpg

This fits perfectly underneath my rear seat and has almost everything I need.

I bought it at Tractor Supply for the front of my ATV, I have the Kolpin contoured on the back and switched to running a Kolpin fuel pack on the front of my ATV.

I have heard that the newest ones out are getting a little flimsier in quality than the older ones.

Ive been doing some research on the bestop instatrunk. How does it install without drilling? Also is it completely secure when the trunk is locked?

It uses a type of pop rivet to create a nut for bolts to screw into. And yes once the trunk is locked no one is getting in

Effisimo 08-13-2011 08:38 PM

Thank you for everyone's input! Im going with the instatrunk from bestop. I found the installation instructions and watched a few youtube videos on it.

Are you selling any ammo cans, I am in a military town and they are pretty expensive here.

mtnbiker 05-16-2012 11:33 AM

Hey Jeep_VT where did ya get your tool box for your Jeep? It's exactly what i'm looking for, also wondered what the dimensions of it are. Thanks!

Jeep_VT 05-18-2012 12:53 PM

Found it on craigslist. Here is the link to my thread about it! http://www.wranglerforum.com/f5/my-new-trunk-93173.html

Here's one I found at Harbor Freight. I don't use or need the rear seat, so I drilled a 1/2" hole in the bottom and use one of the stock seat bolts to hold it in. I bought some 1" flat stock 1/4" steel bar that I cut to the width of the box and bolted it on the inside to hold it in. When I wheel, I use a rachet-strap from the rear seatbelt loops on the floor across the top of the box to make sure it doesn't build up any momentum to tear away.

I think it was about $89. Black anodized aluminum. Came with a lock. Cut a plastic Stanley tool-tote from Wal-mart to sit inside and carry smaller tools. Works great.

I bolted this down in my mustang.
