For us, it is all about exploring new places. Once you are there, you don't really care about all the mods, the high tech gear. etc etc. It just doesn't matter. What does matter is reliability, and over the years I have come to trust, and rely upon our Jeep, my maintenance schedule, and the basic knowledge necessary to,, #1; stay out of trouble, & #2; if into trouble, know how to not panic, and fix what needs to be fixed to get home safely.. Happy Wheelin',,, Be Good, Be Safe, Tread Lightly...........
Hello Rubicondon,
we will visit Utah in May 2012 and I plan to do the White Rim trail with my wife.
Is it possible to do with a Midsize SUV? I already received the permit from the NP Service.
How long did it take you for the trip? One or two days?
Know Im posting on a thread from last year but I have 2....:thumb:
Very Nice This is exactly what I want to do go Jeeping with a trailer and see places not seen very often ! Very nice Kudos to you and wish you had more pictures:wavey:
First trip to Moab last spring. Probably the most awesome place I ever visited. Flat lander in rocks, scary. I still don't know how to describe it. Hope to make it back yearly.

Troller Brazil, The White rim trail is rated "easy" and I don't think its eroded very much since my wife and I last went there. A mid-size SUV should handle it comfortably.
If you're gonna stay in Moab, you would only need a day to complete it.
absolutely gorgeous. the main reason I got a jeep was to be able to do things like that and come out safely and have a blast and be able to drive the same vehicle I use to explore on the road as well. excited to contribute to this thread one day!
We were planning on doing the White Rim Trail. We were all set to go and were instructed to visit the visitors center. Come to find out trail was closed. Always have options in case your plans don't work out. Visitor center is great, very helpful people.

great pics! we're headed to Moab the last week of May and are going to do an overnight on White Rim (yes, have the permit :thumb. In all the times I've run trails in Moab, I've never run White Rim, much less camped out there - I can't wait.
Have you camped on White Rim? Which site(s)? Any particular hikes, photo spots, etc you'd recommend?
We got one of the last overnight permits for the trail for the week we're out there and the only site available was Airport (which I hear is the 'worst' of the campsites, though I use that word loosely) - I really was hoping for White Crack or Candlestick. But, we'll take what we can get given our late planning.
Hey Comac!
we got permits in May and they planned us for "Potato B" Campsite and "Horsethief Trail Road" Entry.
I think that is rather close to the entry. What do you guys think?
JSmithTx,
Do you think we should call the Visitor Center upfront to know if the Trail is open or closed?
Can you guys tell me how long it takes to do the trail? Is there anwhere to get a good set of maps of all of the trails in Moab? We checked at the visitor center and at the jeep rental but did't receive a lot of info. Troller, I would check if you are going. We were newbs and didn't want to appear too dumb. I didn't even know they had overnite permits.
You only need the permit if you're going to camp. You can drive it in a day (it 100 miles or so on dirt, so no issues unless it's wet or the road is washed out), but 2-3 days is better to ensure you get to check out all the little hikes and off-shoots ... according to what I've read.
For an AWESOME book on Moab go here: Charles Wells' Utah Trail Guide. Get the spiral binding - trust me, you'll appreciate it! His books are written rather conservatively (IMHO - but, I've been wheeling for 20 yrs), but using his books as guides, I've run many of the trails throughout Colorado and Utah. They are fantastic and I've found no other reference that comes close in terms of the amount of comprehensive info.:thumb:

1. about 2000-mi (one way) from Forest, VA to Moab
2. would tent (I am a backpacker & have that type gear) camping work?
3. guess I need sone GI-type fuel cans just in case?
4. How much water did you carry on this trip?
5. I understand permits are needed for over-nights
6. Cell phone service work out there? :whistling:
Worth every mile, I'm there right now, most fun I've had in years. I'll post some pics soon.
Tons of great great camping
I've been out for 4-6 hrs per day and only used a quarter of a tank
Couple of bottles of water per trip
Cell phone works
Go in may or October
Plan 5-7 days of wheeling, next yr we're planing on added lake Powell for a few days
You're lifted right, you can go stock but it's more fun
Meet you there may 2013
Moab is so much more than this one trail. Get the Charles Wells book mentioned above and go have fun. I am taking the family the first week in June.
