Help with 8.8 swap in YJ

Ok guy/gals gonna start buying hardware for my 8.8 swap slowly.... Any good info on a cheap place to get all the odds and ins I need (besides more)? Like u bolts, u bolt plates, 7/8" wheel spacers, ect... Thanks in advance. Also anyway to do the e-brake cheap? And do I need to do anything to the driveshaft?

I would check for a local shop like six states distributing. You might be able to get all the u bolts and stuff for about the same and not get charged shipping. I just reused the ford stuff.

You will need to get the flange to u-joint adapter. Spicer # 2-2-1379 for the 1310 yoke and # 2-2-1369 for 1330 yoke. Your stock jeep has the 1310.

Did you see the 8.8 swap kit that MORE sells? It comes with U bolts, plates, spring perches, and shock mounts. It's been like 6 years since I did my swap but I remember it's pretty reasonably priced.

Ruffstuff is cheaper. But if doing a SOA you would need to get the off set spring perches for the d30 from MORE.

Ok another question. Should I put this back or find something else to fill the hole?

Irongrave 08-20-2011 03:32 PM

if you have a welder or access to one weld the tubes to the center section. that is the major flaw of the 8.8. It will spin tubes

Still have mine in. I have seen some people take them out and remove raised metal around it so that they could build a truss on top. It should not hurt anything leaving it in. I think it is a speed sensor.

I have the ruff stuff bracket kit for mine waiting on the bench for install, well made and very beefy.

Ya I'm buying that. But money's been a little tight lately being my 3 year olds b day and a short week at work. Mines a slow build process. I still need rotors and calipers for it.

Are you positive on the 1310 yoke? Wanna purchase it now, but it's dark and no idea where to check.

ramsdell_ 08-30-2011 08:56 PM

Sorry for the delay I have been out of town. 1310 is what I get for my jeep.

Also got my swap kit from ruffstuff.com for $119 shipped.

Now all I need is rotors and calipers then it ready to be cleaned up, all new parts put on the in the jeep hopefully by the mid-end of sept. Thanks for all the help guys.

I also just finished putting an 8.8 into a YJ of a friends. The yoke was # 2-2-1379 for the stock u-joint. I also used the factory Ford plates. His only has 2.5" of lift and I ran into a a problem with not enough travel in the slip yoke of the transfer case. Easy fix in this instance (new tranny mount) but be sure to compress the suspension and double check yours.

I was able to use the explores emergency brake cables with the jeeps equalizer but he went with the drum brake rear end. I'm not sure if the disk will work the same or not. I had to use a ZJ cables on the TJ that I did,but they use a completely different ebrake setup.

I use a Moser 1350 yoke instead....that will yield more droop and strength with coupled with a 1350 slip yoke in the case :)

Got my 8.8 swap kit from ruff stuff today, what a bad ass kit. If I break or bend any of this I'm gonna need a tank to play with.

BlackedOutYJ 09-05-2011 07:48 PM

Does anybody know if a master install bearing kit from a mustang 8.8 work with the explorer 8.8?

BlackedOutYJ 09-06-2011 06:37 AM

Help anybody

Ibuildembig 09-06-2011 08:55 AM

I dont think so but I am not 100 percent certain. Look at ringpinion.com and compare part numbers :)

Looked it up and they will work after calling the manufactures of the one I'm trying to get off eBay. And I did use you website as well and it helped confirmed it. Thanks!

Ibuildembig 09-06-2011 03:50 PM

Glad it worked!

Last night I got my open carrier swapped out to my LS carrier, set ring gear installed new bearings on it then set it. Took all the old e brake shit off. Now I gotta wait fir my new brake kit then it's all ready to go the pull the D35 and start getting measurements.

Ageless Stranger 09-17-2011 02:43 PM

Something is wrong with your carrier. It should look like this. ;)

Thank you! And ya I'm slacking on pics. In the next few days I'll be finishing the axel. So I'll have plenty proofs of it done. Picked up some hammered on paint to give it a slick look while preventing rust.

And gears I'm keeping the 4.10's. Granite they suck in the hwy, mines not a DD so it's mainly for the woods mud and rocks. Lol so the 4.10's don't bother me at the moment I'm gonna be doing a 302 swap this winter (hopefully) so I gotta see how the gears are after the swap.
