what are the dangers of useing wheel spacers?

1. If they are the cheap kind you put a lot more stress on your wheel studs and increase the possibility of them breaking.

2. Good ones are not cheep costing between 60-80 for a pair. Most good steel wheels with the correct back spacing only cost around 40-50 per wheel.

My vote get wheels that work not spacers

If, you get spacers, maybe check out the Spidertrax brand, they are ~ 200/set of four (you buy them in pairs). Make sure they are "hub Centric", meaning they sit on the machined lip of your axle flange, and they have a machined lip for your wheel to align on.....just a better way to go to alleviate any vibrations/shimmy's you may get.

When my wheels get old, I am going back stock and getting a set myself.

Wheel spacers are perfectly safe when used correctly.

Yep used the spidertrax blue 1.5 spacers on my pass two wheelers and absolutely no problems...these cost me about $80 a pair.

Never really heard anything good about spacers. You're basucally just adding in another element to the assembly that has the potential to fail.

if you run cheep spacers yes. Spidertax and Wheeladapter.com spacers have been proven to be safe and reliable. I have a friend running W.A. spacers and has broken just about everything thing there is to break on his truck. he has had no issues with hubs or ball joints with the spacers. Though I still stand behind my statement new wheels are not much more money and are a better offer a better solution

depends on the situation...wheel spacers for simply increasing width aren't worth it imho if you are getting a new set of tires anyhow, might as well get a new set of wheels....in my situation they were cost effective, i had a stock set of bronco rims/tires laying around and my 31's are on bronco lug pattern....so getting spacers/adapters were cost effective over getting 8 new wheels....no issues with mine(paid 75 a set) and they're alluminum, my tires don't stick out much further than what was on the jeep when i got it(already had offset rims). i don't recomend hitting mud holes or rocks as hard as you can with em though...

I had some on my 92. I bought cheap ones for like 120 a set on eBay. They worked fine with 31" tires. I don't know how well they would hold up for harsh offroading, but for little stuff they seemed fine. 1.5" spacers make jeep look way better.

Either way, whether you go with spacers or new wheels with more offset, the part probably taking the most stress is the wheel bearings. You're shifting the load axis farther away from a radial load on the bearing. That said, it's unavoidable if you want to run the wheels you want. It's nothing major, just one of many factors in the life expectancy of the bearing.

And that said... our wheel bearings are pretty solid. The only Jeep wheel bearings I've done time and time again are the later Grand Cherokees left rear, only because the seals always fail. I don't know why it's always the left rear but it always is.

If you run an 8.8 rear axle, you kinda have to run spacers in the rear, or your wheels will sit further in almost an inch each side (almost, but not quite), you might not think its noticeable, but it is.....

I run a 8.8 and I don't run spacers in the rear or wider wheels in the rear the difference between front and rear track width is only a 1 1/4 or 5/8 per side and is hardly noticable. My 36" iroks don't rub the inner fenders while flexed so I see no need to run spacers.

I ran 1/2" spacers up front for the last 10 years to keep my tires from rubbing on the springs at full lock. They were a cheap solition without sacrificing my turning radius. I havent had any issues with them.

x2 except I'm using an 1 1/4". Stock wheel base currently with 3.5 backspaced wheels on 35x12.50's. I was in the camp of no spacers and no big deal if they rub the springs slightly until I got caught on a difficult trail a while back. I was completely bound up and the way I needed to go was impossible because my tire was wedged against the spring and wasn't budging. Skinny pedal or winching would have caused something to snap and this was a *bad* place to break something. I managed to get out of the situation after about an hour and some creative stuff, but decided I never wanted to be put in that position again and installed a set of spacers the next week. They will stay there until I swap out to full width axles.

My opinion is if you don't really need them, then don't run them. However, there are definitely scenarios in which they are advantageous and I've never had issues with mine even after being put through abuse. I do enjoy having more stability with a wider track as well.

an 8.8 rear is only around 1 inch narrower overall and wont make a difference. The only way we use spacers is running a stock wheel with a 33 tire.

High quality wheel spacers are just as safe as having a wheel that sits the tire outboard by the same amount. I agree with the hubcentric advice. There is no difference in in going with a quality wheel spacer vs. going with a different rim on the Unitbearing, the wheel studs, or any other components. If you like the rims you already have and wish to keep using them then quality wheel spacers will work just fine. The key word of course is quality. :)
