2012 Gas Mileage - let's get some real world numbers!

For those of you who are lucky enough to already be driving your 2012s, what kind of mileage have you been getting? Mind posting some info to help out a prospective buyer?

Specifically, I'd love to hear the following:

1. What are your wrangler specs? (rubi/sahara/sport, 2/4 door, 3.23/3.73/4.10 gearing)
2. How did you drive it this tank? (still in break in, city/highway breakdown, conservatively or like a bat-outta-hell)
3. What number fill up is this? How many total mikes so far?

I think this would be valuable info for potential buyers and also for comparison between current owners. For reference, I'll be ordering an unlimited rubi on Monday, but am still torn on the 3.73 v. 4.10 question.

Thanks - you guys rock!

2012 JKU Rubi 4.10
16.8 mpg from LA to Sacramento bat out of hell
500 miles on it.

I expect it to get better after it loosens up and I stop playing in the fast lane. It really is nice being able to accelerate from 70mh to 85mph with ease.

Get the the 4.10 if your getting the auto. the difference in gas mileage is miniscle. You get better gas mileage by loseing weight!

Thanks for the info - sounds like you're not as scared of the CA Highway Patrol as I am! I am planning on getting auto, by the way.

I just want to report that my 2012 Rubicon Unlimited w/ 4.10 gears used up it's first tank of gas...first tank of gas yielded 314 miles, it was very uneven driving and in the engine break in phase.... How is everybody else with the Unlimiteds and 4.10's set doing?

So far it looks good..

2012 JKU 3.73 Auto-
22.4mpg highway w/300-400mi on the clock cruise set @ 72mph as much as possible on a 80 mile treck up and down I-79 in PA...
17.6mpg city w/0-200mi on the clock...

Both via the Innovate Motorsports OT-2 can bus logging interface Innovate Motorsports OT-2 -

Duffyc04 08-21-2011 04:56 PM

Sounds like pretty good number so far! I'm looking at getting the 2dr Rubi w/ 4.10's, so I guess I can expect a big gain from my current ride (Tahoe Z71).

Bronsonbull 08-21-2011 07:35 PM

2012 sahara jku with 3.21 auto.

18.6mpg city (350 miles)
23.2mpg highway (180 miles going just under 70 mph)

NEO Jeep 08-21-2011 07:38 PM

2012 Sport S, 6 speed manual, 3.73 with Freedom top.

Just under 18 mpg highway.

Dropped to 16.5 in city now.

It does cruise EFFORTLESSLY on the highway @ 75 mph.

Odd feeling in a Jeep.

I fully agree, this is some good stuff. One other question I had is what kinda engine RPM are you guys running at highway speeds?

Xia Wu 08-22-2011 09:59 AM

How is the feel of the 4.10s with the auto? Does it feel like it's shifting a lot or searching for gears at lower speeds? Noticeable power difference (if you've driven both)?

kev324 08-22-2011 10:19 AM

2012 JK Auto 3.21 gears stock tires. I do 70% highway and 30% city driving.

My average MPG has been 21.5 - 22.0 (confirmed by my math at the pump).

SlackerMD 08-22-2011 10:40 AM

After spending a good part of my first two days with my 3+ week old 2012 just looking at that MPG display fluctuate, I decided to turn the display to compass/temp and have NOT looked at MPG since...

off a cough 08-22-2011 10:52 AM

You should only be measuring gas mileage between fill-ups. The only real benefit to the display is to give you feedback as to how your current driving is impacting efficiency at any given moment.

tcass 08-22-2011 03:29 PM

2012 RUBICON, 6 speed, 4:10 rear @ 500 miles on it. First fill up was about 18.0 mpg
2nd fill up was 16.1 Gallons after 292.7 miles averaging @ 18.2 mpg (dte read 41 miles and my computer mileage was 19.1). My drivingis mostly 4 lane and at speeds of 60-70 mph if I can keep it there. So much fun to drive you just want to go fast. Already doing better than my traded 2007 Sahara 6 speed w/3:21 gears and i expect it to get better.

2012 JK Rubi auto w/ 4.10s

Just filled up. About 850 miles on Jeep so far. Still driving like break in. Full throttle bursts, lots of city driving, and little interstate miles. Calculator showed 20.1 mpg today. I have been averaging between 18-20 mpg for all the fillups so far. I expect a wee bit better when I start driving it normally. The eco guage by the way is usually showing high 18s.

Up Hill Bill 08-22-2011 03:54 PM

439 miles total. 2nd fill-up (10.49 gals.) after 177 miles = 16.87 MPG. Country roads, town traffic, long hill, very little highway yet.

First fill yielded 15.55 MPG. Going in the right direction.

Jeep specs. in signature.

12 JKU Sport, Auto, 3.21

Looks like I lead the way for lowest MPG. Im getting 14. All city. All stop & go. Still driving in break in mode. Coming up on 500 miles. I havent done the math myself yet, just going by computer. But 14 is what its reading.

BenoA 08-24-2011 07:35 PM

Long time lurker, first post! :D

Great post guys. What is the size of the tank on the 2012? 22.5 gallons? The same as on a 2011...

Have you changed your break-in driving technique? You said before that you might have been driving too 'granny-like' and lugging a bit - worst thing for MPG and break-in. I assume you're driving more 'peppy' now, and still getting just 14 MPG? Maybe, actual calculation will be better. Some say the computer readout can be pretty far off.

4-door = 22.5 gallons, 2 door = 18 gallons.

Yes , I have changed. Definitely a little more aggressive. I was looking at 13.8 MPG just before fill up. Im gonna wait till next fill up and do the math myself. But im sure the computer is pretty accurate. No biggie, it wasnt a factor when I bought the Jeep. Just want to make sure nothing is wrong. Im in a "big city." All stop & go. However, I never had so much fun driving to the grocery store !!

I don't know if this applies to the TJ as well, but what would be better "driving behavior" to maximize gas mileage after the break-in? I stay right under 60 and keep the RPMs right under 2k during the entire acceleration to the speed I need.

This is what I'm talking about!

With the torque curve of the new 3.6, and the new auto tranny, 3.21's could be very fuel effecient (for a JKU)...yet still not feel "too slugish". It won't be super peppy off the line (or rock crawl)....but it can (almost) sip fuel.

At 2000 rpm's, the 3.6 is already at 250lb-ft.....which is 96.15% of peak (260lb-ft at 4200 rpm's).

Using the chart from the other thread....3.21's with the auto tranny is at 1955 rpm's at 70mph.

This is HUGE for me because this Wrangler may replace both my Libby (winter/tower) and my gas sipping Integra (summer, commuter).

On my 5 day old 2012 JKUR automatic. According to the computer, I have been getting 14mpg in city (city and bumper to bumper traffic) and 21mpg on the interstate. Average calculated on first fill up was 19mpg (245miles driven).

Like others I have been VERY pleased with both the smooth shifting and acceleration both from 0-60 as well as passing at highway speeds (55 to 85mph). I took a drive yesterday from Denver (5,280') to just beyond the Continental divide (11,158') on I-70 and back. I experienced very little downshifting on the transmission. Acceleration while passing, even on the relatively steep incline, at highway speeds was effortless.

This was a completely different experience when I tried out the 2011 JKUR a few weeks prior on the same trek (dealer let me take it home overnight).

I am loving my new 2012 JKUR...

Are you running 3.73s or 4.10s on this?

Thanks!

4.10. Of course keep in mind that riding up to the Continental Divide is likely not a weekly experience. I realize it might not be a fair comparison; although seems like since I went up and back..... Anyway, according to the computer I got ~12-13mpg going up and ~26-28mpg coming down.

Still - getting 19mpg on a 4 door Rubi with 4.10s is nothing to sneeze at. This is what I ordered and I plan on doing quite a bit of highway driving - would love to see this kind of mileage when I need it while still getting the oomph I need to get the job done at the low end.

1. JKU Sahara with 3.73
2 and 3. Half city and half highway for this (just my second tank)
