2nd 4th and reverse shifting problems write up

OK all since that seems like a common problem i've decided to do a write up on how i fixed my shifting problems after my 2" body lift... It should also work with tcase problems... the problem was the shifter would be hitting the the console so it would pop out and wouldn't stay in the back gears.

Any who.. and so it begins :D
ok all stock.. thats how it was originally.

First thing to do is shuv a flat screw driver in there, pull the booth upwards and pry in the direction as shown. (carefully)

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...DSCF0004-2.jpg

Pops right up

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...DSCF0006-1.jpg

You can see the clips on the plastic thing on the bottom of the booth.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...DSCF0007-1.jpg

Pull the booth up as far as it can go untill it hits the shifter knob. Underneath you will see a foamy hose looking thingy similar to this one on my pic.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...DSCF0019-2.jpg

Anyhow pull that up too and just hold them both there with one hand and try to shift to the rear gears and see if the shifter hits the console. If it doesn't hit or just barely hits then it will all work perfectly. If it hits hard then put everything back together since this wont work and you will need to bend the shifter or move or cut the console.

So if it doesn't hit, it's time to remove the shifter knob. :punk:
Shuv a flat screw driver in there pointing outwards and then pry inwards. Careful otherwise it will damage the rubber on the knob.

Continued..

It should pop out at which point use your hand to pull it up.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...DSCF0009-1.jpg

There should be a nut under there. Use a socket wrench to undo the nut.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...DSCF0012-1.jpg

Next unscrew the knob it self (counter clockwise). It may be tight so this may require power since the factory uses some locktite on it.

When the knob is removed simply pull out the rubber booth and the foamy hose thats on the shifter and then screw the knob and the nut back on.

Now when putting the "cap" on the knob back on.

Put one end on like that again.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...DSCF0009-1.jpg

Then use a screw driver to push it back in.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...DSCF0013-2.jpg

So it will be just a hole there.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...DSCF0021-1.jpg

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...DSCF0018-1.jpg

The booth..

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...DSCF0016-2.jpg

Remove the plastic on the bottom of it. Just stretch the booth and it will fall right off.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...A/DSCF0022.jpg

Will need that for a new booth.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...A/DSCF0023.jpg

Carefully put that thing back where it once was... The bigger side goes towards the dashboard.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...A/DSCF0024.jpg

I have mine just like that.. a hole in there. I will be installing a leather booth there some day (leather is soft and thin compared to the stock rubber booth). Make sure the shifter knob is tight and then take it for a spin and see how it works.

Looks like a real helpful post trip, but it's called a boot, not a booth, a shifter boot!!:D:flipoff:

lol np :D

I'll tell you how I fixed mine... Destroyed the trans, paid 2k to get it rebuilt, and viola, it shifts great now.

my forth gear seams 2 go in fine but i have a problem getting it in to 2nd and reverse. i really have 2 pull back hard 2 get it 2 catch could that be the same problem ?

Triple88a 09-29-2008 04:55 PM

yes it could be. Its very simple to check (not even a 5 minute job). Just do what i show on the first 4-5 pictures and see. If it works, then continue on, if it doesnt make a difference then put it back together. I mean all you need is a screw driver to unclip the boot from the center console you dont have to undo anything. Once you unclip it, take the boot and the foamy tubing inside and lift it all the way up so its not in the way and then shift around to see if it will hit the center console. If it shifts fine then continue. If it still shifts bad, but does not hit the center console then it must be something inside the tranny. Does your shifter have lots of wobble on it? or is it pretty tight when it goes in gear?

It could also be a problem with the metal plate underneath so when you have the boot up, you can shift into 2nd and then feel around inside the rubber boot inside the hole. (just dont shift with your fingers in there as that might be painful if it gets caught) I'm pretty sure the writeup is your problem though.

the tranny feel tight. when u are in neutral and you go 2 shift into 2nd gear it only feels like it will go back about a quarter of and inch and you have 2 hold it there and hope it wont gring and make you look like a fool lol. my thing is 4th is ok its 2nd and reverse. i just hope i dont need tranny my fiance just brought this home for me as a engagement present a couple days ago. i will try taking that off tonight thank you very much for all your help and i will let you know if this works god i hope so. so u think it maybe the book? all my jeep has is a 3inch body lift with 31 10.50 15's

Triple88a 09-30-2008 07:00 PM

now i'm very sure that this is your problem, your tranny is fine. The 3" bl is your problem. Mine had this problem with only 2" bl. When you install the bl you're suppose to bend the shifter a bit so it doesnt hit the center console. Anyways though this should help you out.

that was the problem you were right. i took the boot off and wow what a difference. where would i get a aftermarket boot that will fit? thank you again very much for helping me fix my very simple problem. lol:appl::appl::)

MudDan 10-02-2008 06:50 AM

Short throws are pretty nice I have a B&M and it cuts the throw almost in half. It feels wierd to drive my 97 that doesnt have one. Good luck with whatever you do.

I drove mine with a boot for quite a while. You can check on ebay however making your own might be your best fit here. They are easy to make.
