Painting Rubicon Wheels

2 Attachment(s)
I decided to paint my Rubicon Wheels on my 2012 to make them look more like the COD/Mountain Wheels. Here's a small write up on what I did and some pics.

Supplies:
1. 3M Paint Remover Pad with Drill Attachment

Attachment 65412

2. Extra Scotchbrite pads, non drill attachment
3. Prep All
4. Duplicolor Wheel Color paint - Graphite
5. Duplicolor Wheel Color paint - Clear
6. Painter's tape

Steps:
1. After removing wheels and tires, I taped off the TPMS and the stem, rather than removing. Note: the 2012 uses a new TPMS sensor, so I didn't want to risk breaking one and not finding a replacement yet.

2. Optional: clean the wheels with Prep All. Not needed, but helps if there is sticker residue or junk on them

3. I scuffed the wheel with the Drill attachment and then used the pads to get into all the little spaces. Scuff em really well, but don't nick them up. You want the shine to be gone and the wheels to be scratched so the paint will stick.

4. Clean with prep all. Do a good job of removing dust, grease, sticker residue, etc.

5. The first 4 steps are the most important. Success is based on good prep.

6. Spray the wheels with the graphite paint, one coat at a time, but you don't have to wait for each coat to dry. Use short bursts. Otherwise you'll get excess pant bubbles. 3-4 coats is good.

7. Let them dry for 30-60 minutes.

8. Spray them with the Clear paint, 3-4 coats again with short bursts.

9. Let them dry for 2-3 hours. They are dry to the touch in about an hour, but you want them fully dry before install.

10. Remove the painter's tape.

Thanks. I used the Duplicolor Wheel coating (I think I called it cover in the OP).

Thanks. It's the first time I've done anything like this. Very happy with the results. Idea came to me when the wheels I wanted were backordered and I couldn't find any COD wheels.

I was thinking of doing the same with mine, only black. Is it really necessary to dis -mount the tire from the rim?

No, you can use a deck of playing cards to mask off the tire. Stick them in the the bead, works like a charm.:thumb:

Or index cards if you like.

It looks awesome! I'm thinking of doing the same thing to my black JKU. Could you tell me what size and type of tires those are and how much of a lift you have?
Thanks

How many cans of the graphite and clear coat did you go through for all 5 wheels? I'm planning on doing mine tomorrow.

Thanks

I did the same thing. I used 3 cans of paint and 2 clears I think? It's been a little while

renaveg 03-16-2012 07:49 PM

Cool, thanks. Did you do a coat on the inside of the wheel also? maybe just 1 coat of the graphite?

I didn't do any on the inside. Others may have. I think the way the wheel is shaped, unless you're really inspecting it, you can't tell.

It takes some practice to get it right. I stayed away from the inside of the wheels

Casotakar1229 03-17-2012 01:57 PM

Jervboy 04-18-2012 06:23 AM

ND,

It has been a year, how did the paint job hold up?

Thanks....

ndrugby 05-08-2013 10:29 AM

Very well. I haven't done a single touch up yet. I'll try to get a pic later on for you.

I would love to see the 2013 sahara rims painted graphite...

MacCTD 05-18-2013 07:17 PM

Thanks. Thought about it. I liked the look, and figured if I wanted to change my mind and paint them it wouldn't be that hard to do later. It's also what the COD/Mountain wheels looked like.

I consider painting the center caps, but trying to leave the Jeep text unpainted, but it felt like too much effort at the time.

I like this idea, what brand of paint did you use?
