Front Driveshaft Rebuild DIY vs Shop
Okay guys, my front drive shaft needs to be rebuilt. I plan to do this myself and can get the 3 Spicer 1310x (new model of the 785x) U joints and the ball centering kit from a local shop.
My question is what are the reasons that I might want to go to a shop? I was told that the local shop would need to weld something during the rebuild, but I don't see any reference to this in any of the posts on WF.
I just chatted with a guy at the local shop and I think he said that if there was more than 3 thousandsth of an inch play between the shaft and the ____ (I'm not sure what he said), then they would need to cut off the shaft and weld a new one because the old one is shot.
He suggested that I just do it, and if I have any problems to bring it in and they can weld the part onto the drive shaft.
Can anybody offer insight into the amount of play and the part that might be worn and need to be replaced with a new one? Thanks all!
Sorry, should have written "Hey 'guys and gals'!". But nobody from either gender can answer this question? I don't believe that.
Depends what type of tools u have at Ur desposial. I rebuilt a buddy of mines drive shaft not too long ago. The u joint are fairly easy. The ball sleeve I had to grind out then press/ tap back in. Not hard if u have the rights tools
