wire gauge question

I just installed a pair of 6x9's into some wedge speaker boxes. I used the supplied wire which was 20 guage. I have 12 guage wire and was thinking of swapping to that. It is the factory head unit so this may be overkill, but I want as much sound as possible. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi,

It may not help, yet, it certainly will not hinder your speaker performance to use #12 wire rather than the #20 wire the vendor so generously supplied with your speakers.

You won't hear a difference with the swap. The real question is whether the 20ga is safe. Without doing the math, and guessing at the power output of a normal HU, and the distance from the HU to the rear where you likely mounted those 6x9's--I would say you are fine.

If you have 200 feet of that 20ga speaker wire, and you have a headunit that is delivering bigger than normal power---I'd swap it so that the speaker wire doesn't act like a fuse, but I seriously doubt that is the case.
