Tow rigs, redux!
 
Any of you dealership types, or just big truck guys fm way back, see if you can help me out here. What is the difference between a 1-ton truck w/ DRW and the same truck w/ SRW? And if there isn't much, what would be the difference between a 3/4 tonner and a 1-ton SRW, if equipped the same?

I'm narrowing down how I want to travel w/ the TJ, but I don't quite get the differences between what appear to all be about the same truck, just one has an extra set of tires and fancy fenders.

I think DRW stands for Dual Rear Wheels, like a "dually" and SRW is Single Rear Wheels.

Basically what the DRW is for is a wider area to distribute weight on to.

Never had a 1 ton with srw. Absolutely no comparison between a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton drw towing, at least in the old days. I used to tow a heavy 25' trailer everyday and went from a 3/4 ton extra cab/long bed to a single cab 1 ton dually. The first couple of days, I actually pulled over a couple of times to make sure that everything was ok, because I couldn't feel anything back there.

I'm sorry, I guess I wasn't clear, I know what they mean, what I'm trying to figure out is if there are any significant structural differences under the skin. All the big three offer diesels in 2500 series trucks, but it seems like all three offer the same truck as a 3500, and then another truck, same gear, but with the DRW. I was able to find that at least Ford limits the gearing you can get w/ the SRW, but it might be worth it to upgrade the gears, I just can't see the benefit in going w/ the DRW when I'll only use it maybe 3-4 weeks out of the year! One of the 3 rates bumper towing 2500lbs less w/ SRW but only 500 less on a 5th wheel w/ SRW.

Right now I'm leaning towards a pop-top camper in the bed and a flat bed trailer to tow the TJ on. Me + 3 or 4 in the cab, and all our junk.

I used a Dodge 3500 dually 4x4 with the Cummins to pull rv's from the factory to the dealerships for awhile. When I was shopping for my truck I asked the same question and was told the only difference between the 2500 and the 3500 was the heavier spring pack. then you add on the fenders and extra set of wheels for the dually.

As far as the difference between the dually and the single rear wheel. I did a run with a guy driving a srw and me in my dually pulling the same exact 5th wheels. We were heading across Iowa and hit some fairly heavy side wind, he was all over the road while I was still perfectly stable.

Hmm, so adding airbags to help w/ the weight would pretty much make a 2500 equivalent to a 3500 w/ SRW, huh? Interesting, good to know, thanks for the info Skeeter! You're pretty helpful for a window licker!:rofl:

I know that the dual wheels make a huge differance in stability, ya just don't understand it until you experiance it under load.
