First post, tranny problems

Hey guys, I've been on other forums for other cars I have, but I've never had any problems with the Jeep that I've needed help with. I tried searching, but I wasn't even sure what to search for.

Here is the problem:
My wife drives the Jeep and it is popping out of first gear when she goes to take off. She said it was happening a lot and today it just kept popping out. I'm going to drive it some and see what I can comme up with, but I was wondering if this is common on a Jeep with a stock tranny and around 130k miles and what it could be. She also said that it has popped out of 2nd gear once, and kind of shakes in third. Any ideas?

Need more information: Need you to drive the Jeep and evaluate the problem and repost the results. Could be bad driving habits sucha as her putting her pocket book in front of the shifter while she's driving....then again could be something mechanical like your linkage needs adjustment or your syncros are toast....

Good luck, welcome to WF and let us know how it goes.

Well, it used to happen to me ONCE in a while with first gear. I'm hoping to get under it tonight and check things out with my brother, but I may just park it until I have time. I'll just let her drive MY BMW and drive the old '83 BMW until I can fix it. Problem there is the old bimmer has no radio or AC.:(

Ditto....Has it been lifted? On cold mornings the boot around the shifters sometimes binds or the rubber seal underneath.

No lift or anything. It's just a stock 2001 Sport with the 4.0L I-6. It has 33"x12.50"x15" tires, but no lift or anything.
Also, I'm in NC and it has been HOT here, even in the mornings. We're having a friend of a friend look at it to diagnose the problem, but I don't want to pay someone to work on anything of mine. I'm sure I can fix the problem with the help of my family (brother & Dad) but my brother said it would be easier to try and seek out some tips on a forum first and see if it's common or not.

Thanks for all the help so far guys! I really appreciate it, even with my lack of info.

Possible worn shift fork not engauging the trans fully into gear.
