Need advice on '98 Wrangler towing?

I have a '98 Wrangler with a straight six, manual transmission. How much can I safely tow? I currently tow a heavy Honda Aquatrax PWC with no problem but am wondering about a small camp trailer?

Jeep rates the Wrangler (SWB) for 2000 lbs towing capacity. There aren't very many small pop up trailers that actually weigh less than 2000 lbs when loaded.

I've towed around 3500-3800 lbs and it was a little hairy. Took a bit to get moving and stopping was something you had to be very careful with. I would not do it again. It also caused a nice wine in my rear end. I would stay within 500 lbs of the factory rating, no more.

yes 2k lbs. the problem isn't how much the jeep can tow, it's how short the wheelbase is. when you go to stop all the trailer weight is focused on the tongue. if the trailer weighs to much you will be lookin at sky. i would go a couple hundred pounds over in a pinch but not on an everyday basis.

Good point, shouldn't of implied that it is ok to go over the max rated all the time... Actually it is better to do it none of the time...
