Cherokee to TJ Swap
One of my brothers friends wants to get rid of his 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport. It has a 4.0 and is a 4 speed automatic. It has a cracked piston but the engine still runs. It has a fuel problem where it shuts off sometimes and you have to get it on level ground to start it again. I don't think that will be a problem since it is getting swapped into my TJ. The 4 wheel drive also doesn't work (not sure why, could be a simple fix). My TJ is a 1997 Wrangler SE. 5 speed with a 2.5 and D35 rear axle.

My question is in doing this swap will I run into any problems? I want to swap the engine for sure. Will I have to do the transmission and transfer case as well? Will I run into any problems with the axles currently on my TJ or should I swap?

If you see any other things I might have a problem with please let me know. I don't want to ruin something or have issues with stuff not fitting.

You want to swap in an engine with a known mechanical problem?
So on top of all the work to get it in, you also will have to do a rebuild on the engine?

Umm, maybe I'm missing something but that doesn't sound like too good of an idea.

I know I have to rebuild the engine. Minus that fact, what else would I need to change on the TJ?

It may have a high pinion dana 30 worth swapping over.

For the front? I think the rear has a chrysler 8.25. If I swap that I'll have to do the front as well so the gearing matches right?

I dont think the 4.0 will bolt up to your 5 speed.

Ya I didn't think it would. Would I be able to put in manual? Like an ax-15?

Yes, you can but I would recommend getting the tcase and tranny at the same time. Just make sure you have the same spline count is correct for your application. But yes, it can be done. Splines vary depending on year and application. Easy to find the info online though.

the rear is a d35 unless it has the factory towing option which will make it a d44. the d44 sounds like a good idea. i'm not sure i would go swapping in a motor that i had to rebuild. better to find another used 4.0 for less than the rebuild would end up costing you.

The Cherokee is also a country not a sport. I'll look in to how much this will cost me. Once I find out exactly what it has on it

And then there is the concern of ECU's...

unfundedtimmy 09-13-2011 04:11 PM

Couldn't I either use the one in the Cherokee or tear one out of a 97 wrangler?

probably one out of a 4.0 wrangler with the as-15

unfundedtimmy 09-13-2011 04:58 PM

Okay. Does it matter the year? Like 1997 to what year? And the harness. Would the Cherokee one work?

6InARowMakesItGo 09-13-2011 05:10 PM

97-99 4.0s had ax-15

unfundedtimmy 09-13-2011 05:17 PM

I know. I was talking about the ecu and wiring harness in my last post.

6InARowMakesItGo 09-13-2011 05:26 PM

and i answered you. those are the years you would need.

unfundedtimmy 09-13-2011 05:36 PM

Oh okay. Sorry. Thanks.

There are certainly a lot of factors to consider. Make sure also that the transmission you use is from a Wrangler or you will end up having to cut the skid plate and let the transfer case hang through. The AX15 and AX5 out of a Cherokee have the t-case stud pattern clocked 13 degrees therefore causing the t-case to hang down lower. Had this happen to me.:banghead:
Sound like a fun project - Good Luck!:thumb:

I know there are a lot to consider. He probably won't get rid of it for awhile anyways. If he does then my uncle wants me to put in the v6 from his Jimmy in the TJ instead. It'll need rebuilt but only because it is about time for it to be rebuilt. Nothing is wrong with it. Just high miles. Idk I'm sort of happy with the 2.5 for now. Little slow on hills but you learn to love it :)
